I have a surgeon 6.5 creedmoor that I bought new from them about a year ago and love everything about it. Mcmillan A5 26" Krieger with a uso 5-25. Right before I ordered it I found a helluva deal on a 308 on gunbroker, surgeon 591, McMillan a5, badger m5, jewel, 24" mike rock m24 contour 308 barrel. The barreled action is uncoated and it isn't bedded. I put a premier 5-25 on it. It shoots great but kind of over the 308 when comparing it to the 6.5. Im thinking rebarrel to another caliber. 7mm08 or 6mm creedmoor, mostly shoot steel out to 1000 but will also deer hunt with it on occasion. Any input on a caliber choice or option would be appreciated.

6mm would get my vote if you want to change it and is you go 6CM you would stock the same brass for your 6.5 and just have to form it. That's definitely an advantage. I'd look into barrel life with the 6CM vs other 6mm's though, I have no idea if it's good or bad but I'm sure others here can comment.

Everyone needs a hand out rifle in .308 to make sure your friends don't out shoot you...

all the calibers you are discussing have the same bolt face. instead of getting a new rifle, you could just get additional barrels fitted to your action in your choice of caliber. All you need is a barrel vice and an action wrench and you're ready to rock with a switch barrel system.

Other than barrell, what the cost for a switch barrell setup on a 700 SA ? I'd imaging there is some machinework involved....any links? Is Briggs the go to for the Remage like he is for the Savage Prefits?

Take the barrel off the 308 and go with a 6mm Creedmoor setup. Have the stock bedded and rock on.

OP has a Surgeon action. He would need to have the barrels chambered and fitted to the receiver, but afterwards, barrel changeout is a snap ... no headspace gauges needed.

That all depends on how much you want to spend on ammo and how much recoil you want. For the purpose you listed I would stick with the short action. How about some pictures of the current configuration?

Stay away from the 7mm-08. It shoots too good and I need all the brass and bullets I can get to feed 2 rifles. :)

My vote is 7mm-08 if you plan to hunt with it. More knock down power and the 162s kick the wind good. It is my favorite all around caliber to shoot. 6mm stuff does awesome on paper but you are loosing that knock down power at distance to take a deer or pig.
