iread a post the viht powders had lost big contracts and have gone bust, is this true, could they be finished

all i see is that they talk about one factory (out of several) and that's about it ...

We're still waiting to see what may come of this. The plant will stay, and will continue to produce powder as they have Finnish military contracts extending out for at least the next ten years. What degree it will impact the commercial sales, is still something of an open ended question. For now, we're still importing and still receiving shipments on a regular basis.

Keep you guys posted as I learn more . . .

Frack! Just when I find powders that I really like, the world goes to hel in a handbasket once more!

Wow REALLY scary..... This MIGHT be why BJ @ Third Generation Shooting Supply haven't been getting their orders. ........

A little history on who owns what (posted this previously on another thread regarding the fact that Hodgdon's does not make powder...). Anyone else that can add info please do.

General Dynamics purchased Olin/Winchester etc and produces the following spherical/ball & single base powders: In Quebec, Canada IMR 3031, 4007ssc, 4064, 4198, 4227, 4320, 4350, SR4756, SR4759, 4831, 4895, SR7625, 7828, PB & 7828ssc, and in St. Marks, Florida Hodgdons HP38, 110, 414, 380, Lil'gun, Hybrid100v, HS-6, H335, BL-c(2), titewad, titegroup, longshot, leverevolution, cfe223, us869, superperformance and also Winchester 231, 296, supertarget, superfield, aalite, superhandicap, 760, 748, supreme 780, auto comp.

The Thales Group (french company) purchased Australian defense industries in 2006. They produce in australia Hodgdons Extruded line H4895, 4198, Varget, 4350, 50bmg, 4831/4831sc, 1000, retumbo, 322, benchmark, trail boss, 8208xbr, also H4227 (AR2215)(not distributing H4227 in US anymore).

Group SNPE (french owned again...) formed a subsidary called EURENCO in 2004 they own most of the european powder produced in belgium, finland, france & sweden. This includes Vihatavauri, ramshot and most of the norma line & alliant reloader line (except RL-17 switzerland/german?).

The old alliant powders like red, blue, green dot, unique, bullseye, 2400 are still produced in the usa. Accurate arms powder??

A whole lot of good powders are now owned by two french companies...if Eurenco is shutting down Vihatavauri, whose next??? Maybe Winchester 748 wasn't such a bad .223 powder, at least it's made in the USA.......

Kevin,
Enlighten us as to the when and where of these shipments, Powder Valley sold out of the 500 series last week, not much more in the country. Usually by this time of year it's in stock all over, not this year and it's had nothing to do with 12-14-2012.

EXACTLY.................... I been at Third Generation Shooting supply for AWHILE and what they tell me is "it's BEEN on order". And they have got TWO shipments of powder in, but NOT VihtaVouri....

I read up on the sale of that factory a while ago. A company official stated that they had warehouses full of powder.
As far as availability goes, I was told that shipping from overseas is pretty lengthy, since everything comes by ship. The reloading supply store in my area had the VihtaVuori powders I was looking for.

Kevin any word on the Vihtavuori situation????

Wonder if fear of the UN Arms treaty has anything to do with it? I mean the USA is easily the biggest consumer of these powders worldwide I would imagine... Maybe they see the writing on the wall, and are just getting ahead of the game before the big giant open door slams shut......

Still nothing concrete as to V-Vs future, but as I believe I mentioned elsewhere, they've got government contracts extending out for the next ten years or so. The plant will remain in operation, but their shipping of commercial orders is the question. They are still in search of a buyer, and I think there's at least one promising potential out there. If that one comes through, then it'll stay on the shelves, and (hopefully) may even improve their availability over here. I'd like that.

As to where shipments have gone, that I can't tell you. You'd need to ask either Graf's or Hodgdon, as they are the actual importers. Who they sell to as far as local distributors, I don't know. Sorry, but that part's just not within our area of operation, so to speak. I do know that Graf's just got a container in a few weeks ago, and I just picked up some N140 and N32C from Hodgdon's very recently.

Kevin,
I hate to sound difficult here, but how can I buy from from Hodgdon's?

Milo,

You'd need to contact them, and find out who they've used as distributors in your area, or who else they sell to that does online sales. Sorry, but the actual sales end of the equation isn't something that Adam or I have any direct dealings with.

So I just learned that I've been pronouncing Varget incorrectly. It's a soft t. Lol
