16-18 inch shorty rifles

I am digging this thread. I came upon a Howa heavy barrel in .223 with a 24 inch barrel that is begging to be cut down. This is a 1 in 12 twist gun I am pretty sure. Am I losing much by going to 18"? I read the whole thread including the additional posts which are great if I was shooting a .308. Of course I might be missing something I have a splitting sinus headache.

This would make a handy coyote gun to 400 yards with a 4 x 14 x 40 scope on it I think.

CZ527 Varmint Kevlar in .223, now .223AI...

18" threaded factory barrel, OEM CZ rings (for now) holding a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 P5 4-12x40...SO far, a very pleasing little machine. When I get some loads worked, this ones going to get a LOT of miles on it.

Can finally showed up.

16.5 barrel. About 24" with the can.

how much velocity is lost when going from a 22" to a 16" on a .308?

Depends.... Most after market barrels (Bartlein,Brux,Rock Creek,Broughton,Schneider,PacNor, Exc.) lose around 20-25 fps per inch when cut. Factory barrels can lose a little more as most factory barrels are slower anyway due to inconsistent land/groove patterns or tooling marks left in the bore.

I found that when going from a 24" barrel down to a 20" barrel on a factory Remington, I lost right at 25 fps / inch cut. 100fps is noticeable, but also can more than be compensated for, provided your scope has the elevation left in it with the slower velocity. Just my experience.

"Rem 700 action trued by LRI"

That is one awesome rifle! Who is LRI that did your truing? Are they California based?

Long Rifles Inc. is "LRI" Sorry. They are in Sturgis, SD. They are running a group buy for action truing, re barrel, etc... Thanks for for the compliment!! Hopefully will be down soon.

And....the rifle morphs again...

I came across a killer deal on a used McRee, and another deal on a set of NF UL rings. A little cerakote, and I think this rifle is finally starting to get to where I want it to be. I am only a good piece of glass, and a barrel away from perfection. For now....

Bump and tag b/c this thread so damned sexy. And it's inspiration to sock a few bucks away for yet another build.

18E- Very nice looking build, I would like to build something almost to the same spec for hunting.

Could you please tell me what barrel contour that is (looks like Rem Varm.) and what is the total weight of the package?

Thanks.

Correct, It's a Remington Varmint contour. I don't have scale to weigh, but it is light. I put this together to be a "truck gun" for plinking with 168 SMK's and hunting with 165gr NABs or 130g/150gr TTSX.

Thanks for the confirmation. Please post the weight of it when you have an opportunity, even if it's just from the bathroom scale.

Now I finally get to post in this thread:

Updated Look!!!

I Always wanted a GAP Gladius but could never stay focused enough to Save Up for one. I don't have the patience to wait anymore so I went on and put together my own little "Gladius Inspired" rifle.

This is what I started out with:
