New Load test today, Savage FTR 308, Kriger 30" 1/10 heavy palma tube. Varget, Lapua brass, FGMM 210 primer, 185 Juggernaught 25K off the lands. On the 5th target i shot a 45gr round (circled in blue) I transposed the hit on to the 6th target. I love 44 and 45, not sure what to make of 44.5? Eric what do you think?

thx Ted

You are running a metric butt load of Varget.

Where did you get your numbers?

Berger's recommendations is 37.5-41.6 with 41.6 showing a 102% case fill(compressed load).

The Hodgdon site shows 180gr from 41-45 and 190 gr from 41-44, so I worked up slowly, no pressure at all at 45!

Those aint the same bullets as what you are shooting though. Who knows how long they are compared to what you have(Speer soft point and Hornady boat tail soft point). If you had no pressure signs rock on. Im just a little leery of running that high when the bullet manufacturer's recommended numbers are below where you started. I know 45g is compressed(just barely though IMO) with a 175g SMK and the 185 bergers are a decent bit longer so I am SURE 45g is compressed with them.

This chamber was cut for this bullet, I don't have much if any comprssion going on? Again zero pressure.

Varget has a way of surprising you at top charges... all can be well for long periods of time, and for reasons I'm still trying to figure out, without warning it'll start loosening or outright blowing primers at the higher charges.

I used to run Varget with the pedal to the metal... but in these days of scarce and pricy brass, I look for a lower node that gets me what I want without over-stressing the brass.

Just chiming in to clarify that yes, Berger's data is 2.800" COAL. Not only that, but their data is derived from Quickload, not pressure testing and I've found it to be cautious and conservative to the point of unuseable. Their max (I own the manual and have loaded their bullets for 6 years using the email'd data before the manual was published) for the mid-size cartidges is usually 2 grains or more lower than Hodgdon's data. The velocities derived in real rifles at Berger's max for 308, 260 and 243 in my experience is laughable and will not allow you to be competitive. All this is just one man's opinion, take it or leave it.

With that said, I agree with the others that 45 grains of Varget is too much with a 185. If you're not seeing pressure signs, good for you, but I think at 45 grains your brass will wear out quickly at the very least. I'd like to know what kind of velocity you're seeing. I wouldn't go that high with that combo.

Looking at your targets: load wise I would concentrate on 43.2-ish and 44.4 only if I felt I had to. I personally wouldn't be comfortable running more than 44.5 on a regular basis whether or not the groups look good based on my past experience with 185 VLD's. For me those shot best at 43.0, but I was loading them at 2.82" OAL and they're of course a different bullet.

In summary I would try 43.2 and test at different seating depths.

I was getting around 2750 with the 45gr of varget. These are not the VLDs no jam. Check out my day two results.
