I am looking to buy my first high end scope and needed a little help. I am looking at either the Leupold MK8 3.5-25 H58 or the Steiner 5-25 MSR. It will be going on my Savage 12LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor. The Leupold is a little shorter, has a broader mag range, uses a more common battery, and has awesome CS. The Steiner has a better illumination location to me, slightly lighter, little more eye relief, less busy reticle, and also has great CS from what I have read. Assuming both are the same price, which would you choose?

I have the Steiner and have been very happy with it, I've never looked through the MK8 so I can't say there. At that price point it really seems to come down to preference of options IMO.

I just ordered the Steiner 5-25 MSR this morning from Cameraland. Open box demo (never mounted) for $2499. The also offered (over the phone) a Hide price of $2650 for a NIB sealed !

This may help you choose.

Something to consider when looking at the new trend of "huge mag range" scopes. If it is a FFP you have a decided disadvantage if you need anything other than a fine crosshair at low power. On a 6+ factor zoom I wouldn't touch it. I have had some 4,5,6, and 8's. The 5's are the upper limit of what I prefer. I'm super happy with my Steiners, not to say the Leupy won't work well, but I really dislike the idea that the reticle is essentially useless below ~35-40% power.

Another issue with such large mag ranges is that the change in exit pupil size is significant and the brightness & clarity at upper ranges tends to suffer.

I've told a bunch of people this, the only useful place that I see a 6x mag factor to be reasonable is on a short-dot type scope like a Razor 1-6, S&B Short Dot, etc. Somewhere that you'll be brush busting or potentially taking shots to 4/500 at the outside.

I don't own either. From what I've gathered a common complaint with the Steiner is the reticle thickness at the center. Haven't heard many complaints about the Mark 8 other than some people don't like the pinch turrets but IMO that's just a preference/what you're used to thing. Glass it seems is a little better in the Luepy, but again that's subjective as everyone has different eyes. I don't think you'd make a wrong decision with either though. In this price range you are not buying crap. Have you looked at Premier?

What's the rifle being used for? That could help people steer you in the right direction maybe.

Mainly looking to shoot long range matches with it.

I get what you are saying about the erector though. I was pretty big into cameras before guns. Generally speaking, lenses with a larger magnification range gave up image quality and brightness. Looks like I will stop second guessing myself and get the Steiner.
