right now i am playing with varget or benchmark my avg is 43 grains varget is around 2530 10 round avg 42 gr benchmark is about the same is it worth it to go up to say 43.3 or more to get over 2600fps ? or will i not notice any differance at 600 yards ?

Which ever velocity your rifle groups the best is ideal. Look up OCW load development, and start there.

For me, in a 20" 10-twist barrel, I am 2630-2650 fps from a 175gr. So your loads sound a bit slow not knowing anything else about your setup. But as always, watch for pressure signs, and take whatever you can get to group the best.

Yes, sounds a bit slow to me, others may disagree... but if it groups, that is more important than velocity.

ETA... if it is the SPS tactical it should be a 1:10 twist. Are you certain it is a 1:12 twist? That slower twist should be giving you a hair more velocity too.

i just loaded up some 43.5 varget and im going to see how that does next weekend ... also the sps tactical aac sd is 1-10 the sps tactical i have is not threaded its the 20in heavy barrel

You can verify the twist rate with a cleaning rod & tight patch. Just measure how far it takes to turn 1 revolution. An OCW work up would serve you well.

Ocw seems really high they say 168 bullet they are at 46 gr max in book like like 44 I think has anyone else used 46fr varget on 168 .308 ?

2783 or 2830 with 168AMAXs, 47grs 2000MR or CFE. Shoots very well out of my 12 twist SPSS.

46.2 of varget with a 168 berger vld got me a national record at 600 in 2007.

wow thats great ok well i feel better about it but how did you fit all that powder with the bullet seems like 43.5 is just about upto the neck of my case

I agree on the ~2800fps. I shot over 4000 of the 168s through my 24" 1:12 SPR at 2800fps and maintained ~0.25" 5-shots throughout that range. My shooting buddies are using 700s with a 20" 1:10 and a 26" 1:12. The short one wasn't able to get the full 2800 but still grouped reasonably well at about 2725.

My load was 47.5gn LR Match @2.885" OAL (moly 168SMK)
The 26" load is 46.0gn Varget @2.880: OAL (168SMK)
The 20" I believe was using the same 46.0 Varget but it has been a while since he has shot so I can't remember the specifics. I know we tried all kinds of powders trying to speed up the pill and keep the pressure manageable but no success without the groups going to shit. All loads used the GM210M primers

Aauletto, Bergers are designed to be "soft" seated into the lands, meaning when the bolt closes and the case head is mated up into the bolt face the bullet is pushed softly into the lands. Also, when I seat my bullets onto 46.2 varget I hear light crunching just about the time the shell holder touches the die, a compressed load. There are members here who talk of using 48grs. of Varget with the 155, NOT ME! 46.2 is my max. I'm getting short case life and primer pocket stretching with winchester brass but it was my accuracy load for 600yds. and 168 Berger vld.

If I don't push them to 2650+ I get extreme spreads in the 40-60fps range...ES is the only number I'm really concerned with and the only way I have found to lower it is to speed them ALL up. My brass doesn't last past three loadings but I know that a shot really low on a target is my fault and not my ammunition

Go with accuracy and grouping at what ranges your looking to hit. Velocity is something you look at after all that. It obviously helps with longer ranges but high velocity doesn't always mean best performance. Some bullets don't like to be maxed out in FPS as some others do.

And yes the SPS T is a 1:12

The AAC is 1:10.

No. 1, the barrel I was using in 2007 was the factory 24" 40x rem. a very accurate barrel. I have a 29 " broughton now and the only advantage is it will carry further distance with the added velocity. I'm now getting over 2900fps with the same load, but have since gone to the 185's for the higher B.C. There is a definite trade off for these velocities and that is short case life. It's a personal choice one has to make depending on what's important to you. These are strictly my match loads and not my playing around loads.

Thanks, 40xs, but I was asking the OP. Maybe his barrel is only 18".
i'm getting 2820 fps with 45.5 g Varget and 168s from a 26" barrel.
