Getting ready for my first precision rifle build. My question is, is there any real world difference between an 8 twist and a 8.5 twist barrel for use with the heavier projectiles (139-142gr)?

I went with 8.5 due to my extreme altitude (9000ft - 12000ft). I shoot the 139gr and 140gr rounds.

I have two 1:8.5"s on .260s. They work fine. If you're running a slower 6.5, like maybe the 6.5x47 Lapua, you may want the straight 1:8".

Unless your at sea level shooting in extreme cold temps a 8.5 twist will do ya just fine.I'm 550' roughly and have zero problems with the Berger 140 Hybrids or 142SMK's.

Thanks for the replies.
Sierracharlie-since I already have six Remmy actions that is what I am going to use.

I'm at sea level. My first barrel was a straight 8 twist. This one, my second, is a 8.5 twist and it shoots faster and is more accurate than my first. Now the accurate part I would not say is totally due to the twist. I am going to try a gain twist 9.5 to 8.5 on my next one to test. I should get about another 30 fps just with that change. I shoot 139gr Scenars.

I have an 1-8 twist benchmark barrel 24 inches long, it shoots everything lights out, from 120 to 142 doesn't matter. Not sur of the altitude around here but the sea is not far down the hill.

I ordered a 1:8 twist since the bullet manufactures (Berger/Hornady) suggested with use of 140 grain bullets, I hope it works.

I have a 8 twist Bartlein 5R heavy palma on a Savage short
action and it shoots 120`s as well as the 142`s.

When in doubt go with the heavier twist. Check out JBM and input your data to see if it will stabilize your desired bullets.

I shoot a rock creek 1:8.5 twist at sea level (well 300') and I shoot 142's and they preform great. A lighter twist will yield you a bit more speed and won't beat up the projectiles as bad. Either one will work just fine, i over thought this so much and now that I'm more experianced i laugh at myself when I look back. Now i just buy whats in stock somewhere. Just my .02
