these questions have probably been asked before, but searching through all of the threads to try to find the answers was starting to take me too long. I am going to be shooting long-range and I was wondering how long the barrel should be. I assume I want to shoot a heavy in the long-range but don't know what twist and how heavy to shoot? Length twist bullet? Thanks in advance

Cheers

1:10 for the twist rate. 24" seems to be the overall most popular. There has been a push towards 22". I switched out my 24" for a 22 just to help it balance. If you are sticking to bench work then a 26-28" may squeeze out a bit more from the 300

1/10 twist w/ a 26" barrel. Go with a 1/9 or faster if you intend to shoot only really heavy stuff, >220 gr.

thanks guys. This reinforces what I had in mind. 1/10 24-26. It will be a little heavy but I will hunt some of the time. Tactical with the rest.

cheers

I went with a 22" on mine and with 71grs of RL22 it will launch the 208 Amax around 2750 That load gets me to 1000 with only 6.4 mils of drop

If you are keeping your "long range" around 1K, then 24" would be plenty (maybe even 22" if hunting and it will still be a lug if you do a heavy barrel). If you are going to 1500 plus, then 28" and forget about carrying it. 1:10 will do pretty much anything up to the 220's, but if going there, as mentioned, move up to a 1:9

1 in 8 twist 26-28 inches long MTU to Sendaro contour.

The thought behind the 1 in 8 is that you can shoot 220-230 grain bullets out of it better.

Got the idea from a Todd Hodnett article off of his site.

Mine is a 1-10 26 inch long Sendaro contour and I wish I had more twist and more weight.

Any chance you could get me that website. or how would I type that in. That sounds interesting. I've learned a little something here. Didn't realize I would be able to use as short as 22-24 inches. I thought the longer barrels were all the hype?

Cheers

I've got a broughton 5c 1:10 that I put on a rig built specifically for the 230 bergers. Shoots lights out. I'm not saying that a 1:9 isn't better but a 1:10 will do it too....

Oh Lord,
I've been going through the exact same thing trying to decide on bbl. length for the 300. Right now its 26''. I decided to leave it at 26'' and install a brake. The 1-10" 5R rifling works great with the 208 AMAX. You can run heavier bullets but you must go REALLY heavy to beat the B.C. of the 208AMAX. Stay with 26" BUT if you're going to carry it a lot, stay under 15lbs. Mine is almost 17lbs. loaded with 5 rounds and with ATLAS pod installed and it is a PIG to carry it for a long time. (Also because I'm out of shape) Hope this helps.

1:10 twist at 26in long is what i am running and an APA fat bastard brake its probably 28 or so overall. very happy with this setup
