I want to put a select match grade barrel with an M24/M40 contour on my rifle. Will I have to have the stock altered or not? What about replacing the recoil lug? Thanks in advance to those in the know.

It would be a good idea to replace the recoil lug.
It isn't mandatory, but they are only about 35 bucks, you might as well remove one possible weak link from the system.

You will most likely have to remove material from the stock.
How much? I don't know.
I would buy a couple of spindle sander sleeves and use those for sanding out the channel.

I didn't think of the spindle sander sleeves and I think I will replace the lug. Thanks for the reply!

You aren't gonna be able to use a M24/M40 contour with the barrel nut.

Your options are 1. bull contour with barrel nut or 2. nutless "Rem style" barrel install.

If the barrel nut clears the stock, so should the barrel....

Not so. The stock is inletted for the nut, the barrel channel is inlet for the savage factory contour.
As mentioned, he likely won't be able to use an M40 contour, but he can use barrel that does not have as much of a taper.
The stock is inletted with that stock barrel taper in mind, so it can be relieved for a heavier contour.

I follow ya....
Didn't realize the cannel was tapered. My Select Match Shilen barrel does taper the same as the factory heavy.

You could alway remove the Barrel nut and not have it anymore. Mine dont have it anymore. Jered at APA did my rebarrel job. There were several smiths who said they recomend not using it.

Without the barrel nut, you become reliant on gunsmiths to chamber & install barrels...which defeats the purpose of a Savage in the first place IMO.

I think I will have to use the same size barrel that ends in a thinker taper?

If you go Shilen Select Match, you need the small shank bull barrel. It only tapers .060" in 26"
Varmint muzzle .800"(same as factory heavy)
Bull muzzle 1"

I made a Home made spindle sander, got a wood dowel 1" and put a slot in it, cut sand paper and fit it in slot chucked it in my son lathe and sanded away

But they all said Accuracy wise it is better, they told me the reason but with my memory I cant remember why. I didn't want a switch barrel anyways. If I wanted a switch barrel I would get a DTA or AI, which will be my new rifle next Jan. I have to admit my rifle is more accurate then it has ever been before. It started life out as the 10 FCP HS Precision (which I had rechambered and accurized) then when I wore the barrel out I sent it to Jered at APA to rebarrel.
