140gr Nosler Custom Competition

or

Hornady 140 gr A-max.

I've had good success with the A-maxes.

Any range reports you got would be appreciated.

140 Berger VLD or hybrid, in that order.

Nothing wrong with either the Nosler CC or Amax but for my $ I'd go Berger.

YMMV

I am going to go with either the amax or Berger vld hunting. Would love to use the Berger hybrid but had heard bad reviews on game and my rifle will be used as both target and hunting rifle.

Can you tell me where you found the bad reviews on game? I jumped on the hybrid bandwagon a while back and have been using it to go coyote hunting with no success yet though.

On another note, I might recommend going to 139 grain Lapua Scenar because they are cheaper than the Bergers and their BC is almost as high. When making my choice of what I want to use for my 260, I had to go with the hybrid because of the ease of seating and high BC. Maybe, just maybe Brian Litz will make a hybrid hunting bullet sometime in the near future. That's 100% speculation, I have no clue, but it would be really nice.

140 AMAX works very well. I shoot it in factory ammo in matches and it does the job. Relatively inexpensive, accurate and a very good BC. What's not to like?

My friend has taken over 15 deer with 140 hybrids. No issues at all.

Thanks for the info. Just might have to give them a try this year during early season.

I have some 140 and 130 VLD hunters. They shoot just as well, so if I have them left, I figure I'll just use them instead. If not, I doubt I'll have problems with the hybrids. Vital shot should take them down.

I too would be interested in the "bad" reports of the Berger bullets, in my own experience, and that of those I hunt with, they are terrific, as good as any and better than most.

True enuf, I get a half minute with them. I guess its the old "OK, can I do any better?"

I posted a link up above that describes the bad review. I don't want to get away from the op question though. I say use whatever bullet you get the best accuracy with.

Should be able to do better than 1/2 MOA with the 140 AMAX. Factory loads are atleast that. A good handload should do better as well depending on rifle/shooter.

I'm at 41.5 gr, getting from 0.375 - 0.50 MoA. At 41.7 gr groups started to open up, so I quit.

ETA: I'm at 2780 fps.

Thats good accuracy. You get pressure at 41.7? If not keep going. I have been up at 43.5 with no pressure but all rifles are different. I load at .020" off lands but factory shoots sub half MOA at that OAL.

Hell, I'd say my rifle shoots the 140 factory amax as good as my hand loads out to 1,000 yards. From there the 140 hybrid does a better job but not by much.

Honestly, don't know I could give a good definition of what "pressure signs" are. I'm guessing hard extraction, some blowback....?

Yeah hard bolt lift and extraction, flattening primers etc. Shouldn't be getting any blowback as in powder/gas in your face unless you are blowing primers which is definitely not a good thing.

I quickly rescanned the thread, but I couldn't see what powder the OP uses.

With his post about his powder charge and knowing the Creedmoor powder charges I assumed H4350 but good call on clarifying that for safety.

I've shot the 140AMAX, 142smk, and 140gr Berger hunting and hybrids. I haven't found much of a difference in accuracy in my rifles within 800 yds. Beyond 800-1000 yards the 142smk and 140gr hybrid have done better for me. It just depends what works in your rifle.

All good. I shoot 140 Amax - Best value, 136 Scenar - very accurate, but still prefer the Berger 140 VLD. Great hunting bullet.

Most kills don't even seem fair - animal just falls to the ground like it was struck by the hand of God.

best price is
hornady BTHP 140
140 AMAX
barns
nosler
Serria

i have used most of those, all shot well... the AMAX are the best "duel" purpose round i have seen... on a "soft" target the BLOW THE FUCK UP!....
