I'm looking for a low light scope for a Remington mountain rifle.
Shots are in low light under 200 yards.
I really need no more then a 4x but would consider up to a 6x.
I'd prefer fixed but will consider a variable. What do you guys reccomend ?

In a fixed power of the magnification you're looking for, Leupold FX3 6x42 w/ #4 reticle or, if you can find one, Zeiss 6x42 Diatal, also with #4 reticle.

I prefer fixed power scopes too, but you have a bunch more options if you're willing to go with a variable.

Isn't there some equation on dividing the obj by the power and that gets you your reall exit pupil light gathering ability?
Anyone?

Exit pupil is the obj./magnification. In the case of the FX3 mentioned earlier, it would be 42mm/6x=7mm. But low light performance depends on the coatings used, and the quality of the glass as well. What is your price range?

Scope with glass no digital added I would recommend Swarovski, Kahles, Zeiss, the Leupold Mark 6 are amazing in low-light, I'm sure there are others also.

If we can be of help let me know.

If you can let me know the
Top 5 best low light scopes- let me know.

The best scopes are not going to be individual scopes. They're going to be scopes within a specific line by a manufacturer. Nightforce anything, Zeiss Diavari, Swaro anything, S&B anything, Leupold VX-6, etc. I think you'd have an easier time if you set up a price range you want to be in, and then work from there.

what, Frank has his own line of scopes I wasnt aware of, your trying to find the best one and I didnt even know they existed.

This one is heavy, but it seems to work. Pulsar Digisight N550 Nightvision Riflescope

Pulsar Digisight N550 Nightvision Riflescope : Cabela's

Zeiss/Hensoldt 6-24x72 is same or better in practice as Pulsar is depending about ambient (IR) light.
From smaller magnification series, Zeiss Victory HT with 95% average transmission is something to consider as lenses are best on market.
72mm FL series can be used on higher magnifications than 3-12 HT if more zoom is required.

My Night Optics D-740 worked wonders. Sold it cause I was too cheap though.

Back about 1974/5 I bought a Model 70 375 H&H and did some hunting trips on Afognak Island (near Kodiak Island), Deer, Elk and of course there are some rather large bears.

As we know bears travel and night and I wanted something to use at night. I found a Weaver K 2.5 and put that on my Model 70. If you had any moon at all, it was almost like daylight.

Great scope for low light conditions.

Later I guess during a period when Weaver went under (if it really did) I couldn't kind a similar scope for my Model 70 Featherweight in 257 Rbts. I ended up with a Leopold Compact 2.5 scope. It was good in low light but not as good as my K 2.5 Weaver. Still a great scope.

When Weaver started putting out scopes again I couldn't find a K 2.5 for my FN Model 70 Featherweight in 270 so I went with the K-4, again a great scope, better then the Leopold Compact, almost as good as the K 2.5.

From all the scopes I've seen, the Weavers seem to be the best in light gathering abilities. I know many people on this form don't like Weavers, guess if they don't cost over a grand they aren't worth having.

I also got a Weaver 3-10 Mil/Mil scope, its a great scope, but to be honest I haven't used it much in low light conditions to voice an opinion.

I think if I was going to buy a scope for low light conditions, I'd go to the big sporting good stores like Cabala's Scheels, etc. after the sun goes down and tell the clerk you want to see how they work in low light, take them outside with the clerk and see. I've done that with spotting scopes and never had a clerk tell me no. They've been rather supportive.

Current situation based on countless personal tests- and also independent lab tests:

1) Zeiss HT -series
2) Zeiss FL 72mm (but is better than HT above 10x or so magnifications
3) Swarovski Z4, S&B Zenith, Zeiss Victory -series
4) Premium German manufacturers top models with 56mm objective, very close to 3) in practical performance

Big gap

All the rest

At powers below 10x, I've yet to see anything brighter than my March 3-24x42, including a Steiner 5-25x56 and an S&B PMII 5-25x56.

what is your price range? what range do you want to shoot? seeing that light weight and low light are taken into consideration, kahles has a really nice 3.5-10x50 illuminated that might fit the bill. my personal favorite low light scope is the swarovski z6i 2.5-15x56, but the large objective adds a little to weight. need a few more details to make a good recommendation.

S&B 4x36 is one nice scope if you want to stick to a straight 4x. They quit making them about a year ago but can be found new on Ebay occasionally. Another good choice would be a S&B or Ziess Diavari 1.5-6x42. The 1.5-6 is a little better in low light and has 1st plane reticles that make it easier to see when zoomed up when there is a dark back ground.

You are hunting at 200 or under
No need for a big scope..

I run a 1.5-6 x 42 S&B on my 6.8 for hogs and deer, great scope of course, plenty of magnification.

That power range or a 2-7 is perfect for hunting 25-300 yards.

I need to revisit this thread. I really like fixed power scopes. Low light a must. How about the Leupold 6x42?

Just see what high end scope european hunters buy now as most of them hunt at dusk and dawn. The best low light scope now is without doubt Zeiss HT with ret. 60. The HT is the new benchmark.
