When I cut metric, if I disengage the lead screw, I can never get the tool to pick up where I made the last pass. No matter where I re-engage the screw. Anybody know why?

Most lead screws are standard thread pitch if you don't have a metric Lathe.

To cut metric threads you have to start and stop the spindle without disengaging the Half nut.

With the standard lathe you can cut most metric thread pitches as long as you don't disengage the half nut.

A good read on the topic:

Metric Threading

The first half is background and largely aimed at those who presently lack metric change gears for their lathe - but it's still good info for those who don't understand the theory.

A bit past half-way down is a method for dis-engaging the half-nut while cutting metric threads. I haven't tried this yet, but intend to do so at the next opportunity.

Great article and explanation Mr. Bryant. Thanks! Maybe Mr. Ward should read it. Seems you can't lose the the original lead screw position in relation to the dial. I suspect you could mark the gears and recover if you are willing to wait for them to come around to the original engagement position.

Never thought much of it when threading bbls for receivers. I just reset the saddle and crossfeed to to pick up the chase I needed.

I just finished 3 M16x.1 left hand for HK cans. Couldn't talk myself into cutting the full .15" flat for the o ring seat. As usual when I second guess it bit me. Next time I'll accept that 5 or 6 threads are enough.

Trust me, I know how to cut a metric thread. I find it laughable that you come on here and try to represent yourself as an expert gunsmith and openly call out and question top tier gunsmiths being the likes of Chad Dixon, Dave Tooley, and Jon Beanland in a few threads I have seen, and then you ask an extremely beginner level question like this.

Glad to see you are paying attn. Kind of disappointed you didn't reply to my well wishes PM when the tornadoes hit. I'm sure Chad, Dave and Jon are great at what they do. Don't know much about Dave. Chad is a chest beater. Jon knows what's going on.

This will be good. Maybe you can explain to me how to pick up the the thread after opening the half nut and making a cleanup cut.

I never said I was an Expert gunsmith or machinist. However, I will give any Expert gunsmith you know a run for their money!

Run for the money? Let's see some pics of what you do there hot rod.

I think we've all had about enough of you. You remind me of a fly that doesn't get the hint when the swatter comes out.

A bedding job?
A stock inlet?
Samples of threadwork?
Barrel fluting?
Bolt Fluting?
Ok, an easy one, ceracoat?
Paintwork?

Let's see your best piece.

How many rifles you built?

Waiting??? I want to see um ace.

You run your cake hole challenging people on subject matters that clearly you know little about with taunts that are juvenile at best. Then when your pecker gets smacked you start pinging questions like "where'd you buy that cutter from Chad?"

Run for money? Dave Tooley has my deepest respect and he'd eat your ass Junior. I bet he at least knows when to shut the coolant off and let a tool eat. . .

So again, Put your $ where your mouth is. Let's see it.

What you don't get is really simple for everyone else to see:

Its not beating a chest. Its MARKETING scooter. Its promotion of products and services as I'm engaged in this trade to make a profit so that my business can flourish and support my family and its employees. Using your opinion as a barometer I guess Pepsi is chest beating when the blind folds go on and they do a taste challenge.

People want winners. Do you want a pilot that says "hope I can do this" or the pilot that says, "bring it!"

How bout a heart surgeon? "hope this works" as he's about to cut open your grandfather for a Triple Bipass? I don't think so.

SO, Let's see JUST how fast your alleged money really is. Show us, educate us, humble us. (me especially since I'm the narcissist)

Holy crap, this thread is so close to Hide perfection - it just needs a pawprint2 rambling diatribe and a few gratuitous Cobracutter F-bombs.

I don't see the point in taking shots at anyone here. If Chad wants to show off his work, fine - he's a paid site sponsor, and I've learned a (metric) shit-ton from him (in fact, it was his earlier posts in this subforum that ultimately provided the inspiration to drag a mill and lathe into my polebarn to make some chips of my own). Most people here are humble enough to receive help and give praise; just because one doesn't see it happen doesn't give that person the right to talk shit.

Have you tried the G76 cycle? It tends to be easier on tools because on each pass the threading tool moves down at an angle so it cuts with the leading edge of the cutter. Then on the last passes it cuts with both sides and makes as many passes at finished size as you feel are needed(usually 2 or 3).
And for the record, us old guys don't disengage the lead screw till we are done. ;-).

Or better yet let a complete fool enlighten us with the use of the word slop vs. the word slope!!! A pompous fool sometimes gets caught in a cleft branch of his own cutting.

I have and I use it often.

I was on the chitter this morning when I typed this out from my phone. (at 0530 it serves as a convenient office to bang out the day's emails, PM's, and Hide Thread Garble)

- It was quicker for me to throw the G92 up there as I use it so often and don't have to refer to notes. :)

<sigh> I really was hoping for one of your run-on sentences with a few hundred words and a dozen or so commas. A couple short, relatively concise sentences hardly counts as a "rambling diatribe", but I guess it'll have to do.

I was hoping for your pompous ass to try to explain one more time the difference between the two words, SLOP AND SLOPE. You seem to have a problem, not just with your arrogance, but with basic English!

I wasn't the one that attempted to use the word "slop" in a detailed conversation about GD&T, and when called out on it on your ambiguous and imprecise language, you tried to put words in my mouth (I never used the term "slope", and had I wanted to discuss that particular attribute of a dimension, I would have used the term "angularity" because it's the right word).

Good luck twisting your way out of that one. You'll find a way, I'm sure.

My Money is 10 to 1 on C. Give the Man his Due, I don't see anyone else with the balls ( being able to pull it off ) to do a Group buy like he has going on and on and on. Just my .02

And a damn fine job of it! I don't give a fuck if some think of it as chest beating, the work you do, the projects you post up and the videos you post of what your machines can do is impressive. You have a lot of money in equipment and the knowledge to utilize it so you can turn out some pretty cool shit that quite a few shops can't. People can't even say I'm swinging from your nuts because all I have had done by you is two bolt fluted and knobs installed because the price was too good to pass up.

Evidently Bryant has taken a midol and has gotten those female problems in check! Still can't bring herself to describe the difference between, "SLOP AND SLOPE", I guess it has a lot to do with her childhood. Having half the town call your mama "sloppy", must have been tough on the little girl. Get over it! Calm down, take another midol and try to describe the difference between slop and slope. You had no problem (or so you thought) when you've pontificated about the word slop in the past, see if you can do it again.

You are quite obsessive about pursuing the definitions of these words, which is kinda weird considering you were the one attempting to use them in the previous thread. Either you are the Energizer bunny of trolls, or you're stupid. I'm going with the latter, and will helpfully provide a couple of definitions:

Slope - the abnormal angle of your forehead
Slop - that space between your ears which allows your brain to rattle around freely

Hope this helps!

Edna Bryant, take that midol girl. You seem to have a problem, I guess in your world, slop- would be the space between your mama's legs! Slope, well you seem to have new definition every time you post-but I guess that is a girl's prerogative!
Obviously, your pompous attitude caught up with you, I'm am happy to pursue these definitions as they quite accurately demonstrate your mental condition, either your mother stayed drunk when she was pregnant with you, or you've turned to some kind of drug, in either case you're a complete idiot.

There are so many incredible points made here, at the same time there are so many grenades being dropped. Ya'll are bored, or what?

Love all of the comments. Esp the Boilerup's pic. Gotta get me a spool of that! And yes Chad, it is chest beating. I have nothing against free market and capitalism. You should get an objective casual observer to read your posts. I get a sense of desperation.

I'm sure you do good work. (or at least your high dollar machines do) You should just let it speak for you. As far as the fluting thread, your pic shows a cutter that doesn't have inserts. That's why I asked. If you weren't full of shit you would have replied. Ball's in your court.

These are the offending left hand metric threads that started this thread.

Little project I worked on today. Threaded a bbl shank cutoff to hold a 1/2-28 can adapter so I could open it up to 5/8-24 for a 300 Blackout.

Pics suck so I shot some thru my tig welding stereo microscope. They suck too but a little better than a blur.

Chopped bbl threaded for the can.

As I've said before, Machining doesn't constitute gunsmithing. I don't have a lot of samples of my work on hand. Most that I'm proud of is for customers and is gone. Never saw the need to catalog a resume. But since Chad asked, more to come! ;-)

A secure man wouldn't feel the need to prove his work in this thread. Yes, there is a difference between showcasing work to market ones business and showcasing work while being involved in nothing more than a dick swinging contest.

Then, of course, there are the folks that post pics of their work simply because they're proud of mastering a new skill. Certainly there is nothing wrong with that but that appears to not be the case here with RBJ.

No, I'm not a customer of Chad's but will fully admit that his shop and work impresses the hell out of me. The fact that he takes the time to help folks that post on this site (without acting like a prick) is icing on the cake.

You just qualified my suspicion I had in the "gunsmith won't return call" thread. You are an idiot!

I started this thread to gain knowledge. I learned what I needed to know after the 4th post. Sorry to hear that you are happy that Chad's dick landed in your mouth while he was swinging it. I normally don't "showcase" but sometimes it takes a hammer to get a hardhead to understand.

I will cease and desist upon Chad's request.

It blows me away how every time i see RJBGuns00 pop up in a thread it turns to shit, i don't know what you're like in person but on here you come off as such a cock.

the massive douche canoe guage is at max capacity in this thread, its AWSOME!!!!!!!! I don't know chad dixon if he walked in and teabagged me but i'd sure as shit buy one of his products before touching anything RimJobsBeforeGuns touched. Throw in a Pawprint rant obcessing about definitions of words and this thread has gone pure fucktard, i've got a rager now, its been too long since so many have gone full retard all at once.

P.S. slope= side of the liberator wedge the retard was when he dumped a load in paw's mom's asshole
slop= her asshole afterwards

I learned something from this thread, too! Apparently, it's "chest beating" and "shows a sense of desperation" if you post complete build threads replete with dozens of pictures (including targets) and customer feedback, but there is no problem with vague descriptions of prior projects and berating customers for being inadequately awesome to receive your services. In other words, talk is OK, but demonstration of action is not. It's like the gunsmithing version of Newspeak from Nineteen Eighty-Four.

BTW, this thread would be totally awesome if for no other reason than Chad posting G-code while sitting on the crapper.

I smiled when I saw the title of the thread. I laughed when I read about being in the bathroom while posting code for a "canned" cycle.
I was sad when I saw all the pictures of simple threaded parts, and I would probably cry if I sent a rifle to the guy to have work done.
Yep, a complete emotional roller coaster of a thread.
Good way to start the day.

You are a funny little man but your insecurity is beyond belief. Your type rears their ugly heads on these types of forums from time to time. It always ends up that the offender (you) is nothing more than an insecure/immature little man crying for attention. No? How about your post a while back where you showed some of your work and then started crying that no one was commenting how good it was? Remember that? If I remember correctly, it didn’t take long before you were crying that no one was drooling over your pics.

I wouldn’t know Chad from Adam if I saw him in the street and I’ve never been to his shop or had him do work for me. All that I know about him is what he posts here on the Hide. If I can be faulted for respecting the work that he’s shown here on the Hide then so be it. Your little “dick” line made me chuckle. I remember saying things like that back in High School too. I, however, matured.

Feel free to call me absolutely anything that you desire. It makes no difference to me one little bit and I couldn’t care less what you write. Why? Because I see you for whom you truly are – nothing more than a lonely little blowhard begging for attention no matter the cost. If anyone “shows a sense of desperation” in this thread is without a doubt YOU. No? Then what is “I will cease and desist upon Chad's request” all about if not a call for Chad to kiss your ass?

BTW, are all the folks in Austin assholes? If so I may have to change my attitude about TX.

woodsy said:

No, they are not.

I've met a number of Texans that go out of their way to disown Travis County.

Yes I remember that thread. Yes I was asking for a pat on the back. Yes it is a mechanical nightmare that should be marveled at.

Funny that so many of you that don't know Chad from Adam and have never had him do work are such adamant cheerleaders for him. Your post is the same as mine. A rebuttal to an attack. If Chad posted a confrontational attack on you, would you go hide in a hole? I think not.

My "cease and desist" was an offer to stand down. Not a request for an ass kissing. I've pm'd Chad in the past to be careful what he posts. If I see wrong info posted, I will correct it. That's when the thread goes to shit. Thank you very much.

I'm actually in the sub of Cedar Park. Can't say if Austin is populated by assholes but they are liberals which is worse. Kind of like opossums eating shit with a grin. You would be right at home but please do us a favor and stay where you are. IL

I'll attempt to spell this out using really, really small words and lots of pictures.

This is the exact same photo from that thread. You can verify this by right clicking on it and inspecting the element. It'll show the file name of the photo. Now go back to the fluting thread and repeat. You'll see that it has the same exact file name. No, there isn't any Steven Spielberg or George Lucas taking place.

So, we'll use more pictures to illustrate:

CAT40 Tool Holder (ER-32 collet style, we'll get to that in a sec.) :

CAT40-ER40-3-Collet-Chuck-Tool-Holder-Made-in-USA-4.jpg

ER-32 Collet:

er32_collet.JPG

Insert:

This is exactly, EXACTLY what you see in the photo. Just so happens the tool is rotating. The coating on the tool is different however. It's TIALN, not TICN.

More examples:

TIaLn:

Pow-R-Feed_M90__7.jpg

TICN:

pvd-TiN-101.JPG

The photo also clearly shows how we are doing this w/o elaborate fixtures, wheels, v blocks, etc. Anyone with more than kindergarden level machining experience should be able to look at this photo and figure it out. It's not rocket science. It's a magnetic chuck for a surface grinder turned on its edge. It allows the part to be supported across its length directly opposite the tool pressure generated by the insert while still being able to rotate freely in the 4th axis.

Simple and elegent. Hence my comment made about feeling foolish for not thinking of it years sooner.

So, nobody is making up stories or writing fiction. You just don't know because you lack the experience. I think asking why you cant disengage the half nut on a metric thread w/an imperial machine kinda qualifies this.

K, lets be upfront here. You challenged me in your PM because I stated that I run .02" breech clearance on my barreled actions. You stated that Remington uses a tighter dimension. Then you went onto "threaten" (vain attempt) to embarrass me by stating it publically.

I've used .02" breech clearance for 15 years junior. Every Dakota Arms/Nesika rifle produced from 2003 to date uses .02" breech clearance. I know because I wrote the programs used in the lathe. -Programs they still use to this date. Its never once resulted in a case head split, missing eyeball, or whatever.

Guns I've built hold national, international, and Olympic records. So it's not hurting accuracy either. The numerous photos posted by clients in our GB section removes any/all doubt.

So AGAIN, you just want to cause a disturbance over nothing.

That is your agenda. Why only you know and I believe you'd find that the only ones that care are those just like you.

As for your lewd comments: Sniper's Hide by and large runs a tight ship and the people here are genuinely good folks. They conduct themselves pretty well. There are always 1%ers however and I think your little outbursts demonstrates this.

I'm faced with a crossroad decision. As much as part of me would like to wabble in the mud and sling it out with you it serves no purpose and would ultimately hurt my business. Our clients expect more from us. 60K views and 300+ participants in a GB illustrates it nicely. I build more guns in a month than you'll do in a lifetime sport.

Understand this however. Moderators here and the owner Mr. Galli have only so much patience. Your little outbursts will be tolerated for awhile (you do it everywhere) and then one day you'll go to log on and you'll get the ban hammer. You'll be locked out, suspended, shitcanned. It's happened before to folks who act exactly the way you do. Call it natural selection if you will.

I'm not the judge or jury. I'm merely a messenger. This isn't a threat or warning. I've not gone to anyone and sniveled cause you say I put my small dick in other dudes mouths. My skin is pretty thick.

Your desire for attention is the furthest thing from my little mind as I pull into the bank drive through with the day's deposits.

Just some friendly advice. Instead of trying to lock horns over nothing, maybe consider changing your tune. you'll likely get more help, get along better, and your learning curve into this trade will be less steep.

I'm done, flame away if you wish.

Spin it how you want. I had the courtesy to pm to avoid potential embarrassment. If you'd have replied we could have worked thru it.

Seems to me that you are the one causing the disturbance. Your attack on me was uncalled for and baseless. You know nothing about me or what kind of work I do or how much. You remind me of a politician. Once they feel the power, they lose common sense.

I don't have an agenda. This is the only site I post on "(you do it everywhere)" Mods can ban me if they want. I'll still be able to read and laugh. You are correct about my machining skills. Other than what little they taught me in smithing school I've learned on my own.

More chest beating.

Do you still want to see examples of the menial tasks such as fluting, bedding, inletting and such?
