So I'm sure that I am way over thinking this and there might be other threads on it, but I can't seem to find any of the threads on it.

So here goes...I'm trying to install a rear pillar in my T4 for the CZ 455. I wanted to know how you guys install pillars in your rifle. I will be drilling an oversized hole in case the hole doesn't go straight and use marine-tex to keep it in the stock. That's what I'm trying to figure out is how to drill the hole as straight as possible. I have a drill press but I question its alignment at times.

Am I seriously over thinking all of this? Do I need to break out the power drill and use the level in it to try and keep it straight? How do you guys do this?

And I would prefer not to buy the jig for it. It's a simple process in theory, I just want to know what works for you guys?

Thanks,
Ben

I generally use a piloted cutter and drill half way thru from each end of the hole. If you're handy you can make one pretty easy. A lathe helps but it can be done with a grinder. If you can find a piece of round steel rod that fits the hole reasonably close, drill a smaller hole thru it for your "cutter". Drill rod is best but any steel will work for 1 hole. Make sure your hole is undersized so it has to be driven in unless you want to solder, weld or set screw. Lathe turn or grind to achieve the dia. you want. Then grind it like a spade bit.

You can also put a pilot on a spade bit but it's hard to get it on straight if you don't have a lathe to drill the pilot. HTH

Be sure to test it on a scrap before you go to town.

Here's a few I've made for one reason or another. The one on the rt is the one I use for most pillars. Once you get the pin/cutter in the pilot shaft, turn it to dia. Face it so both cutting legs are on the same plane. Then grind/dremel relief on the front and trailing edge. Works like a charm.
