Thanks! Haven't done much prototype work have you? When specs aren't critical, you get to fudge a lot.
Decided to make this version since projectiles are cheap and readily available. The problem was I think I got a little over zealous on the powder charge cavity. Even with a 1/2 charge or shooting 2 at a time you can rarely see them. They only go about 350 or 375 yds. When you do see them, it is about the time atmospheric resistance overcomes mass and velocity. The ball starts to spiral out of control. Results in about a 50 or 75 yd "group". Guess I should have rifled the bore.

That brings us back to the C razy N ut C ontraption radius cutter. I had some issues with the Lone Star canned cycle so the halves are not identical and dont line up exactly. The dro X scale on my lathe is out so I just eyeballed it. I could have set up an indicator but WTF. Go for it. It's just a ball.
My thinking (faulty as it is) was that I needed more mass to slow it down and hopefully lead being dark would show up better in the sky. Not to mention shoot a tighter "group". NOT!!! Only shot 1 so far because (I'm guessing the increased mass raised the pressure) I never saw it or heard it land. Didn't think shooting it straight up would be too good of an idea. Figured I better find a place like the beach.
Anyway, CNC radius cutter threw this up.

That may be, because everyone is still in 'awe' of the awesomeness of the prospect of hunting feral cats with a mortar. So,,, about that 'shrapnel' concept......!

Your cutter works just fine. Yes, it doesn’t look the greatest but who gives a rip when it works? I’ve done plenty of things like that too when in a hurry to arrive at a solution. Sometimes ya gotta sacrifice the looks of the tool in favor of getting the job done.
You know, I really think that the reason that you attack other smiths on this board is simple jealously on your part. Something akin to a “wish I had done that back in the day”, kind of thing. Quit coming across as an arrogant, know-it-all, attention-starved, prick and you’ll get along just fine here. We all have something to contribute but need to do it on a way that doesn’t piss everyone off.

Yep, I get a grin every time I think about it! I can picture the 3 ft high jump when the ball hits the pan next to Mr. Kitty. Hope to try it someday. Gotta give me a clue on the shrapnel. I hope everyone checked out the "Deer hunting with a Howitzer" while they were there;-)
I don't attack, Just defend myself. You might get the impression that I'm jealous. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I believe the problem's arise when I disagree and folks think I'm full of it. A lot of what I say is unbelievable. However, I wouldn't say it if I couldn't prove it. Sorry that pisses everyone off. I question conventional wisdom a lot.
I've mastered the art of poor word choice. That may be part of the problem as well.
When I was a kid my folks hired Abby Kraft to babysit us. We watched a scary movie. My brother kept telling me there was a monster under my bed. I didn't want the lights off so I went in with Abby. When she was carrying me back to the bedroom she said not to turn on the light and wake my brother. Of course you know what I did. The bitch threw my ass on the tiled concrete floor on my head. I think that's where it all started.
I know it's too much info but I had to share.
Dang guys. I know the reality of my encounter with Abby sucks but the read has to be funny. I think it is. Even the reality. Just happy I came out with minimal damage. Hope I'm not the only one that thinks it's funny.

Thanks for the insight kiwi. Call it chest beating if you want. There are many ways to measure without a dro. My eyeball ain't too bad either when I can find the right optic.
My intent of this thread was twofold. Primarily to show that there is more one way to skin a cat;-) and hopefully to inspire some to think outside of the box. Sadly most of the population is handicapped by their lack of education and the limits of their teachers' ability. In other words, they fail to use their brain.
Glad to see you read the metric threads thread. It reminds me of the "gunsmith won't return call" thread. Many thought I was a keyboard commando. I took a pretty good beatin' on that one until I posted a couple of pics. Only had a few willing to fall on their sword after that.
And finally, I'm hoping that some will take heed before bashing me when they don't like what I post. Sure, I'm a dumbass but I'm not a total idiot! Thanks for playin';-)
