Anyone heard of this 6.5x51 LPR, made by shortening the Swedish 6.5x55 chamber and reloading dies by .150 and then using 308 brass through the shortened die, apparently a few folks have used it for across the course matches with good results.

6.5X51 LPR

I remember some years back some guys on BR Central giving serious discussion to the newest incarnation of the 6.5/284... it was--and I ain't kidding-- the "7mm-284".

When I called them on it, they were quick to point out something like a .00025 degree change in the shoulder angle of the "wildcat."

:D

That's what I thought Dan when I stumbled upon this....aqualung it looks like the cartridges are very close, I will have to check out the reamer prints and compare them.....The reason this caught my eye is I have a very nice FN SPR rifle that I acquired from a friend, the rifle has a hart barrel/McMillian stock but is in 6.5x55 caliber, I was just thinking this would be an easy conversion to a cartridge that I could have plenty of brass for ( I have a boat load of 308 brass ) and if it didn't work out I could rechamber it to something else.....

Why not just shoot it as a 6.5x55 Swede?? Millions of dead moose can't be wrong!

Just ram a iddy bit more powder in and duplicate the .260Rem, or exceed it...

Sorry my earlier posts were a bit of a piss-take, but it NEVER ceases to amaze me how people keep trying to re-invent the wheel. If there was something WONDERFUL out there, the big ammunition companies would have already pushed it, and if it was REALLY that much better we would ALL be shooting it!

It is understandable to try to do something just a little bit different, but the rifle you describe sounds pretty damn good to me. Just get a hundred pieces of Lapua brass, load it to 260 Rem pressures, and that brass should last you a very long time. Or load it to almost 6.5x284 speeds and the brass should help you burn that barrel out, then the sky is the limit about what you can change it to.

The Swede did not last as long as it has for nothing. Accuracy just happens to be a large part of it. There are a few nominal differences with case head sizes, but correct me if I'm wrong, Remington used the standard 30-06 diameter when they made the Swede. I don't know about the Winchester/FN. You probably already knew this though.

Back about 10 years ago, I looked into the cartridge. I concluded that the .260 Rem served the same niche far more comfortably. The x51 provides a slightly longer case neck. So does the 6.5CM, also far more comfortably.

you could also go with the 6.5x55 GW improved , i hear it's a easy fire form and you have lapua brass at
your disposal. a barrel set back and rechamber and you'll be up and running.
supposedly 140's at 2950ish is pretty easy and mild.
