Had the Idea in my head for a while and just finally did it today. Picked up some JB Weld putty, and a can of black spray paint. Molded a ball of putty onto my bolt, then got to sanding. Just thought I would pass the idea along. I only spent 35 minutes on this but it didnt come out to bad for a quick job. I know some of you guys who are good at this shit will come up with some cool stuff

What prep did you do on your existing bolt knob to help the jb weld adhere? Is prep required? I just don't know.

It looks pretty sweet.
 
I would bet a little bit of brake parts cleaner would do the trick for prep. If the knurling is still good on a factory 700 or win style bolt that should be plenty to get good contact....I'm one of the ones kinda handy with this type stuff just never thought of using it for a bolt mod. I've been wanting an oversize bolt just didn't want to have to ship my bolt off I'll be trying this

I didnt do any kind of prep. Just molded around the factory knob. I thought it would keep it secure enough, plus if I didnt like it I could just use a cut wheel on the Dremmel for easy removal.
 
very fine,clean and respectful of the OEM bolt _
(as m.morning q.back, I would think that mixing some powdered color/dye to the JBweld, if feasible, maybe could have even spared you the spray can...)
 
I made one for my 22, but it a ball shape thanks guys!! it's that simple, it took me less then 5 mins.
 
Got started on my test run with my 17hmr I'll post pics when I get it finished tomorrow super easy and seems like it will be ideal

how do you get the JB to conform to the shape? do you just keep working it until it becomes a little pliable to get the general shape and then sand it down and paint it??? I am going to be trying this as well...badass
 
When you start working it its a little stiff and grainy but after a couple minutes it starts to warm up and get really pliable and smoother just keep working it into the rough shape you want and let it set and sand it to finish the shape

Feels pretty dang solid easy to grip and the flats seem pretty natural and make bolt manipulation very quick easy.

Thinking about doing this to my Savage .260. I know tactical bolt handles for savages aren't super expensive... so when I screw up, it won't cost me much. : )

If you screw up just add some extra and sand it down again, or dremmel it off. Shouldn't come off too bad. Its harder to screw up than you think. Using sandpaper to get the shape you want is pretty easy.
 
just wanted to say thanks for pointing out the obvious! i read this thread the other day and immediately thought to myself, "of course you can!" i just hadnt thought of it... well thanks for pointing this trick out for us slow folks! i tried it on one of my 700s, works perfectly!

Came out good!
 
Just completed mine today. I went a little overboard on the material, which just lead to more sandpaper time, but I had plenty of wiggle room as far as shaping the piece goes. Painted with semi gloss high heat black shot from about 16-18 inches to keep matte finish. I'm satisfied with result for sure. Thanks HC. Pix tomorrow after it's all dried.

I did the same thing, and was happy that I used more than I needed. It kind of gives you a chance to see more of how you want to shape it as you go i guess

I am considering taking off a little of the end to square it up a bit, but want to field test it first. Thanks again, easy mod. And you saved me the nerve racking machining and tapping.
 
So easy a caveman could do it!

My little brother inherited an older Rem 700 in .270 from his father in law. He wanted it upgraded on the cheap so guess who got to work on it! :)

Thanks to this thread, I was able to get him a 'tactical' (I'd say practical) bolt knob for $6 (damn inflation!)

Then glob some more on:

I rough shaped with every home gunsmith's favorite tool, THE DREMEL!
Then sanded with 220, then 400 or 600, then final buff with 1000.
Then tape off, brake clean it, and painted with Rustoleum Engine Enamel (black) ~4 coats.

Damn, fellas, those look great. I've always liked the rounded knobs (like the knobs on AI's and M2008's). I wonder how difficult it would be to get the Weld to be that nice and round, any of you folks know this?
 
The weld will do anything you want. It's going to be up to you to have a good enough eye to sand it round. I also considered a clamp on "form" for lack of a better term, but ditched that idea as it went nowhere. May work for you though....

While not JB Weld I did this DIY to one of my bolts awhile back. It involved cutting the factory handle off, making a new threaded extension, welding it on and transitioning it, making a round knob and finally Cerakoting it.

I did the same with my Savage MKII using "Steel Stik" -- worked exactly the same and the longest parts of the process were waiting for it to cure and then sanding to shape. Painted with Alumahyde black and its been top notch ever since.

Don't even want to ask how long that digi camo pattern took.....
