Well not really mine, but its close. 1.5 miles from the house. A large abandoned gravel pit on BLM land. Seldom do I find anyone else shooting here.

Normally I shoot in my back yard where I can get to 400, I only have targets set up to 300 yards. For longer range, I load up my shooting gear in my ATV trailer and head to the gravel pit.

I was out practicing for the un-coming CMP Garand and Vintage Sniper Match in Cody come Sept. and decided to share some pictures.

This first picture is my blind I set up so I can shoot in the shade (it gets hot and I'm wimpy). Also all my brass stays inside the blind.....hand when there is snow on the ground. The blind is a "full draw" model, meaning I can stand in the shade for offhand practice.

Below, the gravel pile is 100 yards from my position. Beyond that, in the cut in the ridge is 600 yards (distance I'll be shooting the VSM).

This picture is to the rear of my position. You can see the highway, a line across the picture just beyond those trees. You can easily get 1200 yards if you stay closer to the highway.

This one was taking looking NW. Another part of the pit also on BLM, you can easily get 2000+ to the first pit, the second one will get you a mile or more.

Its handy being close to home, no limits, not crowded. I take portable steel targets and can get them set up just about anywhere by hauling them on the ATV. Easily access.

Also, you can get some good dry fire practice at antelope who seem to like to watch you shoot.

That's beautiful country. Do you ever see anyone out there? I shoot on BLM land out here in CA, and I'm always paranoid about catching a ricochet from some idiot that just sets up camp nearby and starts shooting without really scanning the area, or missing someone when I scan.

Do you ever see anyone out there?

Twice. I've been shooting there for a couple years now. Twice I've seen people there, the first time I went with another guy with his AR-50 to shoot up some 50 cal rounds I had.

The second time there were two other guys, they had their targets set up at 100 yards in one direction, I set my gongs up the other direction so we didn't have to stop shooting when others wanted to check targets.

There's lots of room for several people, its just there aren't that many people that shoot there. There is a 300 yard outdoor range and indoor range in town, guess that's were most people shoot.

Wow, i really need to move!!
I've been begging farmers to let me shoot, offered money, nadda. I have to drive 1.5hrs to shoot 300yds, and i have to shoot around cattle and i pay the farmer $50 worth of chew every other trip.
Beautiful country, thanks for sharing

Must be nice, being so close to home. Tad funny that the antelope like to watch, as season will come up soon enough.

J-rod, ways to help the farmers with animals. You can help reduce the rodent/pests population, as you get some trigger time. Since some farmers I meet, they don't have the time or patients. Other then fill the holes, to prevent their live stock taking a wrong step.

Lucky, i have to drive 2.5hrs to shoot to 500yds. Been trying to join a gun club near me about 30min drive $180 a year and out to 600yds but its, like wining the lotto!!

Amen to that, i would love to move out west!

ScudMarket, groundhog'n is what got me into the LR thing, i like shooting them more than i like to bowhunt, and that's saying a lot. Finding a farmer to let me do that is just as hard as just shooting. I've even offered to pay to shoot ghogs...yea i know...no dice.

I need to move.

My overused quote is that farmers would rather give me their daughter than permission to shoot/hunt.
