So I have been going back and forth for a while debating on whether to build an ar10 type rilfe or a bolt action rifle. I think Im leaning towards the bolt action ever since I got to shoot a silenced GAP rifle (thanks Scott W from Surefire). I like the AICS chassis system and I know its a big expense with a factory rifle, but I figure I could use it until I get some more money then send the action out and have it trued and a new barrel.

Things to purchase:
Remington 700 Varmint in .308
AICS 1.5
20 moa base ??????
Timney trigger
Rings????

I will be using the Bushnell 3200 5-15 off my AR, I have warne "high" rings but I dont know if I will need shorter ones.

Also, Im kind of on a budget, I need to sell 2 ARs and a savage stock and action. So however much those bring in is what I get to spend (probably around $1900 if Im lucky).

Id like to shoot some Fclass matches, any other options choices or does sound pretty good?

Re: First nice bolt action plans.

You will need probably want shorer rings and the 20 MOA base should do the trick for a 308.

TPS makes great rings especially for the price, you can't go wrong.

If you want to keep within your budget look at the TPS bases as well.

That varmint contour allows for the scope to go pretty low since in goes down in size pretty quickly after the chamber area.

Look at the thumb screws for the AI chassis cheap piece so you can easily remove it for cleaning if you are going with the 1.5

Re: First nice bolt action plans.

Why build a remmy when you already have a savage action? Just curious but I've heard nothing but excellent things about Savage.

If the AICS were actually available for the Savage I would consider that an option. I know they have plans for it, but Im pretty sure my action is one of the older ones which their proposed stocks will not work with.

Re: First nice bolt action plans.

Best of luck , make your selections carefully, one right rifle can take the place of 6 wrong ones

And thats exactly why Im here, Im selling almost 3 rifles to get one.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Re: First nice bolt action plans.

Honestly If your just going to make it a full custom rifle you'll save $$ just being the right parts and build the whole thing together instead of buying a complete rile and then breaking it down.

If you want a top dollar custom rifle I'd say wait until you have the $$ then buy each individual piece. But if you want it now or plan on using at least half of the parts from the stock factory Remington your going to shell out a lot more $$ than if you just wait.

Ha, I think its pretty funny.

Ya, Ive been through a few guns since then. Had one exactly as described above. Then moved to a custom built 700. Now have a different custom built off a Stiller action, and building a 308 off a 700 action.

Oh and Im a lefty, so I gave up the right hand stuff.

Stocks Im currently using are Manners T3 and McMillan A1-3.
