16-18 inch shorty rifles

I'm a sucker for big bore brush guns. I've been to three big name gunsmiths and none will take on my project.... I've been trying to get a custom 45/70 bolt gun built on a Rem 700 action.... Or Savage!..

Find a Siamese Mauser, they work well for .45-70.

So no one here has an SBR'ed precision bolt gun? I'll have to dig out a pic.

Keep me posted on that AAC barrel. I'm wanting one for a shorty build. Hows 1 in 8 handling 175s? Seems like they set them up for sub-sonic use but i'd rather use 168-175s.
The AACs are 1:10 twist and will shoot those fine. They also recently started offering them in 16.5" that are threaded with a thread protector

was just thinking of a similar build and then saw this. i'm guessing the 16.5 AAC-SD action in a manners folding stock?

SPS tac 16.5"
She ways told me it wasn't about the length, rather how well you use it.

I think he's talking about the "pre-fit" AAC 308 barrels that are 18" and 1:8 twist.

Similar to their 24" 1:8 260 Remington barrel.

The 175 smk’s and 168 amax’s I have used so far seem to be doing ok. That being, 1.5 moa on a bad day and around .75 on a good day at 100y. Fliers keep opening up my groups with the 175’s so I am not sure if it’s the fact that they are pulled demilled bullets, getting used to a new rifle stock (AICS is new to me), to fast of a twist or me... hoping its me and the newness of the stock. So it is too soon to say I have narrowed down a load yet. I have some 168 Berger hunting classics loaded for a 1st round test next. I may have more for you in the next week... hoping to take the rifle out LR.

I want to give thanks to Kyle at XLR for really going above and beyond with his help and service. And to Keith at Phoenix Custom Rifles for making this action out to be everything that I ever wanted. Those two individuals there were top notch and I would highly recommend them! So here it is, 10 months in the making...
My Savage S/A .308 with a new 18 inch barrel, Atlas Bipod, XLR Carbon Chassis, Badger rings and mount, and SS 10x42
Now I just need to wait until tax time to throw on some top dollar glass. This thing is 28 inches when folded!

What are the barrel specs? Looks pretty heavy in contour. Did you keep the barrel nut?

Ben

It's a tac-match and it is really heavy. To be honest, I got the donor rifle as a trade for a ruger 10/22 and sent it away immediately to Phoenix custom rifles.

Heres something just for fun sake until my new barrel shows up

16.5" 30-06 with a Griffin Brake

Stevens 200, 16.5" .308 CBI Light Varmint, Manner EH4 from the group buy (some no-name bi-pod for pics).

That savage looks like a pretty handy little setup. What velocities are you getting out of it?

0 so far! Haven't gotten a chance to shoot it, and now the whole thing has to go to Manners for some adjustments. I just put it together to make sure it 'felt right' as long as it was going to visit Manners anyway. Very happy with how it will be when I get it back.

is it me or is the scope rail on backwards?

Nope. It's backwards. It's 0 MOA and I didn't need the space out front. Now I can use the barrel nut wrench without taking it off every time.

It's done and seems to be a shooter. Got to do load development next weekend. This was just some test stuff I loaded months ago.

Yep, good job Drew. Would love to hear some velocity numbers.

That "mud" camo looks great too, at least I think its mud, looks great whatever it is.

That 7-08 shorty might be the perfect whitetail rig.

Here are the specs. I have not got to do load development yet. Today's load was a 162tho with 42gr of varget. It is too hot of a load with the can on the rifle. I blew a primer about 7 shots in. Speed was 2660fps on these loads.

Rem 700sa virgin action
Oversized pinned recoil lug
Ptg bolt knob
Rock 17" 8.5 twist 5r fluted by kampfield
Yh thread protector
Ptg dbm
Manners T6 mud camo
Coyote cerakote
DNZ game reaper 30mm low base
Vortex HS-T 4-16x44

A hacksaw works pretty good at taking the first lug or two off, too.

I'm too lazy and anal-retentive for that. If I cut it, then I'd have to radius the edges, touch up the finish, etc...once I measured the screw holes as equa-distant, I tried it out. Bolt clears perfect. Hell, it almost looks like it was meant to mount that way.

I don't know that I've seen a 1-4x MTAC mounted on a bolt gun- I like it.

Thanks. I like the scope and I figured either it would work like I want for a ~400 yard hunting gun, or it would go on my AR (which needs a new optic)

Keep me posted on that AAC barrel.

Update...

Since my last posting I have put a barrel bedding pad for about 1.5" from the recoil lug down the barrel channel and took it to my 1000y range. Now I didn't bother shooting a 1000 LOL but at 100, 300, 600 and 800 yards it would appear that this fixed the issue I have had with fliers. 3 shots at 100 made a nice little sideways L measuring less than .5 CTC and about .1 mil high from center. After making an adjustment the next three were a little tighter still. At 300 the lower node with winchester brass shot better and continued to do so out to 800...very little wind this morning, I was only holding about .4-.5 mils of wind at 800 :)

Judging from my elevation used all distances 43.2g of Varget behind 175's is giving about 2480fps. I had pretty heavy mirage and I think that opened up my groups a little but even still I was printing groups under MOA vertically. I'd have 2-3 rounds that would go into the same bullet splash and get excited or the wind would change a little and I would drift the next shot two or three tenths right...

That's sweet! Whatcha shooting out of that? (besides "bullets") I'm guessing PST 2.5-10x44? Mine comes in today. But I have the 20" version AAC.

Thanks Mark,
Running 155gr hbc loaded by winchester Australia for the NRAA.
Its a pst 4-16 mil/mil it will be going onto my AI Ax308 soon and I have a bushnell tactical 10x40 mil/mil for it.

The 20inch aac version is awesome

Nice, I'm going to load some today with 4064(175's) Since I can't find any cfe223/varget/2000mr.

Let us know how that works out. I haven't been able to find any CFE223 either.

Get some LeverEvolution powder. It uses the same exact charge and gets the same velocity as cfe223, and is made by The same company. It was the only powder still in stock during the scare so I bought a lot. It works identical to CFE223 in all the cartridges I use it for.

Wonder how long it'll take for this 'fad' to melt away??
Outstanding, another guy who thinks improving a weapons system is a bad thing. I guess all of the snipers that do this for a living that have found out a short barreled precision rifle is more effective than a long barrel in most situations (excluding ELR) are retards.

THANKS!!!!! I'll look around for some. Glad to see that it has worked identically to CFE223 for you. I appreciate your post. Happy Happy Happy! :D
