I am looking to get a new watch and hope you guys can help me out. The problem is, every manufacturer claims their watch is the best, and I have no idea whose full of crap and who actually makes a good durable watch. Luminox is out of the question, because I own one and it sucks.

In a perfect world, i would like a watch that was accurate in time, very durable, water resistant enough for Scuba diving, had good illumination, and a compass and altimeter would be great but not a must.

Let me know what you have and like, or what you've heard is good. I would like to stay under a $1000.00

Any input on the subject would be appreciated.

I have an ecozilla. It is made by citizens. It is solar powered with a 6mo reserve. It is watch and date only. Lum is great, time is 12 sec between daylight saving time and non daylight savings time, Scuba wont be a problem as it is rated for mixed gas diving. It is built like a tank!!!!! Well within your price range. They make a Titanium auto version that would be in your price range as well. Only down side is that it is a touch big.

Here is a generic web pic.

    Marathon SAR,

You might have to get a GSAR but I prefer still prefer SAR.

Its a automatic, has a great bracelet and should come in right under 1k with bracelet.

It will not have a compass or altimeter but I don't know very many quality watches that will.

Check out watchrecon.com if you not opposed to buying used.

I have tons of other recommendations but start there.

I've got an omega seamaster selfwinding. Had it for 8 or 9 years. Taken it in for "cleaning" twice @ $150 a pop when it started losing more than 5 min a month as the gears do wear (self winding normally loses a couple of min a month.) They were like $1700 MAP but you can find authorized jewellers that will discount. Got it for $1200 which is a little over your budget, but it has held up so well thought it worth mentioning.

I have two watches I really like (well three, but more about that later)
5.11 Tactical Field Ops Tactical Military Watch | Official 5.11 Site has a Sureshot ballistic calc built in. A little fiddly but it does work.
Timex.ca | Intelligent Quartz | INTELLIGENT QUARTZ? TIDE TEMP COMPASS has compass, tides and temp.
I've had both of these for three years and alternate wearing them. Both have held up well and both are around $225.
I also have a (not fake) Rolex Daytona that was left to my by my father. I don't wear it much (sentimental value), but it's out of most people price range anyway ($10000+)

Been wearing timex ironman for like 23 years through every job from roughnecking on drilling rigs to irrigating. I've never had one quit working, they just start to look ragged and beat up.

Since everyone's talking about the Rolex, here's PVD sub that my company gave out.

Favorite all time watch has to still be a Omega Seamaster - especially the new 8500PO - Will post some pictures when I get to the house.

I have a Suunto Core Military. I've had it for 8 months now. It's like a computer on your wrist. I was checking out the MTM and Luminox brands but went with the Suunto after doing a lot of research and figuring what was more important to me. At first I didn't like that it was digital, but got over it. If you don't like those types of watches this one may make you change your mind. It's got too many features to list, but I will say that both my brother and I have one and we love them. Got mine new on eBay for around $225. Saw one at REI for $299. For the full features list just Google it and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Casio G Shock or Pathfinder. Not a big name but they just plain work and you can beat the shit out of them and not feel bad.

Have a FORTIS Aviators auto. Very simple time and date only...Easy to see, good luminescence. Also look at the SINN line.

Have a 35 year old ROLEX Submariner that has seen lots of daily wear and hard use. Totally gone through at almost what I originally paid for the watch...several years back.

Fell into a deal on an Omega Seamaster , the blue faced bond model. It has turned into my absolute favorite. Simply attractive, as well as reliably accurate. Spendy...but I think one of the better time pieces out there.

Then again...SEIKO makes some great watches that meet your requirements as well. You could probably buy a PAIR of SEIKOS. Wear one daily and beat it up...save the other for more formal wear?

So many great watches out there...what a tough decision.

I have a number of expensive Swiss watches, (Rolex, Tag, etc). But I tend to be rough on watches, so my everyday watch for the past 20 years has been a Casio G-Shock. They will take a beating and continue to function with no problems.
Casio makes a model that has most if not all of the features you are looking for, and the prices will leave enough in your budget to buy a nicer dress watch if you desire.

+1 Casio solar pathfinder. If you get the one with atomic RF updating - it stays very very accurate. Otherwise it gets out of sync over a few years. I really like mine - its an ABC (Altimeter, Barometer and Compass) that also does temperature - which works if you take it off and let it settle for like 10-15 min. All running solar powered.

Casio G Shock or Pathfinder. Not a big name but they just plain work and you can beat the shit out of them and not feel bad.

    I'll second that.
I wear a G Shock Mudman everyday and if you work outside with your hands, you don't feel like you have to protect it. I can only imagine what a Rolex would look like on my wrist after 6 weeks.

I'm not rough on them, but I wear mine everyday regardless of what I'm doing. It's always on at matches. I use it to blind the other shooters.

Thanks guys. This helps a lot. Nice looking watches, and some names I havent heard of (Sinn or Marathon).

I've looked at the Suunto Core, and it has alot of nice features, but the display looks like it can be hard to read, and it doesn't have the water resistance. I can also say that I have never had a Casio or Timex fail me, but they do look cheap after they get beat up. I will check out the others mentioned.

I wear a Casio G-Shock Mudman 9300. It's solar and atomic. It has the compass and illum, but no altimeter.

I've a Le Jour chronograph I bought while in flight school back in 1969 that's still going strong. Love it. Extremely accurate and carries a treasure trove full of memories.

Casio G-Shock or Pathfinder. Pick your flavor of either. I have an atomic solar G-Shock, and my pathfinder is at least 7 years old. The Pathfinder has some shrapnel marks on it and still works fine.

Suunto Core. The new ones have user replaceable batteries, if that's your flavor. I was issued this by my unit, so I'll wear it because it was free.

I agree with the OP about Luminox. The one I had couldn't handle a little bit of pressure and died. Luckily, I was issued that, too, so I just took it to supply and they gave me a different watch.

The Suunto Core's display gets a little harder to read in low light, but the back light on it is subtle and works great. I haven't had any issues with reading it. Believe it has a contrast feature that lets you change the contrast, but I haven't messed with that since it works just fine as is for me. The Military version I have is waterproof down to 30ft and it's got a depth meter on it. I've worn it swimming with no issues.

You may want to check out the Tossit T-Touch. Unfortunately a lot of the recommendations above wont do what you are asking as they are mechanical movements. If you want the functions you mentioned your probably going to need a quartz watch. The Tissot could have a better depth rating though.

If you want mechanical I would suggest looking into a SINN as some of the other have suggested. I have 2 and they are great.

    TISSOT T-TOUCH EXPERT - Tissot
    Functions-
Altimeter (in feet and meters), altitude difference meter, chronograph (split and cumulative time), compass, two alarms, thermometer (in ºC and ºF), barometer, date and time (measured on the 12-hour or 24-hour scale), perpetual calendar, countdown timer and backlight.

+1 on the Casio. That makes 8 out of 27 posts. Probably means something. Mine is a Pathfinder PAW1100 and has all the features you are looking for. I think I paid $110.00 a couple of years ago. It has spent a lot of time on my wrist while running chainsaws and weed-eaters. The vibration is a killer of mechanical watches. Buy whatever as jewelry but buy a Casio for performance.

Another vote for the Tissot T-touch. Got it as a wedding present...so far it's lasted longer than she did lol

I've loved watches longer than I've loved guns. At a very early age I found myself fascinated at how mechanical (not digital) watches worked. My handle name tells you what I'm a fan of most. In addition to Breitlings, I have an affinity for Omegas and Sinns. Rolex are nice watches indeed, but honestly it seems like everyone that wants a nice watch buys one. Nothing wrong with that, its just that you see so many of them. Go into any nice investment, accounting or law firm, and almost anyone who's spent more than $400 on a watch will be sporting a Rolex of some variety. Again, nothing wrong with that. But I've always enjoyed things that were nice but outside of the norm. At least in my neck of the woods, you may see one Breitling for every 100 Rolex watches you see on folks' wrists. Omega, maybe one in 300 or so. I love Bretiling Navitimers because they're classic, as well as the Omega Speedmaster. Check out the "moon watch" if you want to wear a piece of history. Any of these are more than $1,000, but like a nice pistol or rifle, will last you more than a lifetime and can be handed down as a great gift to your children or other close relatives. Hope this helps!

Well, this is a watch that is very fun for me since it involves my two hobbies, it is an automatic watch with various detachable modules that I put in for fun, like the one it shows in the picture is a flashlight and a laser light combo.

That is sooooo cool man! It actually has a flashlight attached to it? OMG...and a laser too? Wow! I hope you didn't spend more than $2 on it! Ughhh.

I personally own 28 Rolex watches. They are each valued at $100,000 each.I usually wear them when I am flying my Gulfstream or my EC145 helicopter. My screen name was "Watchlover", but I recently changed it. I'm sorry I don't have any photos of me wearing the watch, as I couldn't find any quality internet ad photos like everyone else did.

I do own several "Ops" watches. I can use my night vision goggles to read the display when I am needing the current time while watching Honey Boo-Boo. One of them will tell me the barometric pressure. That is an excellent feature in case the altimeter in my bi-plane goes out! Don't buy that model. It is off one second every two months (It's not swiss).

And if your into diving like me, I can recommend an excellent watch. The deepest I have been with it was when I free dove to the Titanic. The display is not that bright in low light conditions so I don't wear it when deployed with Seal Team 6. But it does contain a nuclear radiation anatometer with digital synthezising gradiants, which is a great option.

I do have a watch that I use to communicate to my Pontiac Firebird. His name is Kit. That watch is baddass!

    FWIW.

Great write up. Any thoughts on air soft rifles, or play station controllers?

I would really like to punch this guy in the face.

The Casio G-Shock looks much better on my wrist than I thought it would. Got it from recommendations on StyleForum.

    Troll Much?

I have the Suunto X-Lander Military. Its a solid watch just a bit bulky(as in thick) the carbon fiber case makes it lightweight for its size.

However my new favorite watch is my Marathon TSAR, just need to get around to ordering a stainless steel bracelet for it one of these days.

Now now cramey. Just having a little fun with the thread. Don't act like a douche, you douche.

I'm running three watches and just like my rifles, they all have their purpose:

    9591015704_fc55d8b8d1.jpg

    Left: Casio Pathfinder PAW-2000T
    Center: Citizen Eco-Drive Perpetual
    Right: Citizen Pro-Master Diver Carbon

The Pathfinder is my daily wear and recently replaced my five year old PAW-1300T. Awesome watch, has full functionality of everything I could want it to do, and I really appreciate the atmospheric functions and compass when I'm in the woods. It's my third Pathfinder and I certainly appreciate the solar power since my first went through two batteries in less than three years. Since I travel a lot, the world time feature is one of my favorites and is super easy to adjust.

The center Citizen is my primary watch when I want to look a bit more refined, although the beard is still a dead giveaway I'm not. I really like the perpetual calendar and not having to roll the date every other month. It's classier than titanium and still tough as shit. I've beat it down a lot, including my daily wear watch at work for over a year, and the sapphire crystal still doesn't have a nick in it. WR 200 rating to it, chronograph, alarm and all that other jazz.

The Citizen Divers is a recent gift from my girlfriend as we were prepping up for a dive trip this December that may be on hold to move to WY instead. Have to say it's a tank and can act as a backup depth gauge when diving, or as a primary when snorkeling. I'm looking forward to hopefully playing with it soon.

I have gazed and surfed through watch forums, jewelry stores and online shops over and over at mechanical watches, but every time I almost break down to shell out the few grand on a nice one, I end up with a new rifle or S&B instead. Absolutely no regrets there as mine do exactly what I ask of them, are each durable and accurate as shit, and all three together cost about what your overall budget is.

Suunto core military .It just plain works, has everything I need, alt , alarm ,not too bright, waterproof. It tells temp and and has a compass and does weather warnings but I dont really use that.Im hard on watches so this is my everday/work watch.had it 2 years now and no complaints.before that my work watch was a G shock.Neither are very expensive and well inside the lower limits of your budget. They just plain work and thats all that matters to me for a work watch.

OMFG!!!!! You spent $6,100.00 for that watch and another $1.395.00 for the laser and light combo? I thought it was a

$100.00 ebay tacti-cool turd watch. Oh wait....

I have two I wear regularly

The Luminox 6402 has a good bit of finish worn off the bracelet, but takes beating and works like it should. The Marathon is an auto, and is built like a tank. I wear it 90% of the time. Can't beat it. I like a metal bracelet, rubber is not for me.
I have had a few Omega Seamasters, they wear well too.

A lot f great recommendations in this thread. I would also included the watches like Marathon mentioned earlier and Military Watch Co's other models: MWC Watches

    I'll second that.
I wear a G Shock Mudman everyday and if you work outside with your hands, you don't feel like you have to protect it. I can only imagine what a Rolex would look like on my wrist after 6 weeks.

agreed. The only reason I'm on my second one is the dog ate the first. They're not lab proof.

throughout history I made it a game to go to wally martinez and buy the cheapest ass 2.99 craptastica watch they had, it became fun to find the cheapest turd and wear it for a while, you might be suprised at long some of those shit tings will last.

Anywho this past Christmas my wife got me a new watch as a stocking stuffer. She picked it cause it has a ballistic calculator in it and thought i'd love that. Ive been wearing it since and I do really like it, ive beat the piss out of it on ranges and in the field and it's doing fine so far. It's a 5.11 "field ops".

the one complaint i have is the date isnt on the main time screen, other than that i like it alot
