Hi all. New to the site, updated my profile, and posted in the new comers thread.

Bought a Ruger GSR last year. Probably not the best gun for fun long range shooting and hunting, but I wanted her.

Added the XS sight system rail to it. So not looking for a forward LER scope. Looking for a traditional one.
- $600 budget.
Looking at buying the Nikon M308 BDC, feel like it would be a good starting scope for long range with BDC and spot on software. Eventually want to learn mil-dot but don't have access to a range over 200yds unless I'm up north which is only about a dozen times a year.

Any recomendations I would really appreciate.

Thanks, Brendan

Did some research on your suggestions, thank you. Really like the VX-R and the Viper PST.

Concerned about the magnification though, is a 3-9 or 2.5-10 enough to get out there and tickle a target 4,5,600 yds away?

It depends on the size of your intended target. I can tell you however that just last weekend I had no problem shooting clay pigeons with a 10x scope at 500 meters.

Rule of thumb is 1-2x for every 100 yards for most types of shooting. Unless you think you're going prairie-doggin' with that Ruger, I'd say you'll be fine.

The Gunsite is a neat rifle. I did a review on one a couple of years ago somewhere on the 'Hide. The one I shot was quite accurate even w. 'random' ammo.

I agree with the comment that you should ignore the BDC. Learn the mil system. BDC's are adequate for some hunting, but if you really want to get into long range marksmanship, start learning Mils.

The Ruger will serve you well to get started. If you hang some really good glass on it... you can always move it to another gun.

Cheers,
