Suggest a waterproof/windproof hat?

Folks,

I'm looking for a skull-cap, beenie cap, watch cap type hat that is insulated, water proof, and wind proof. Not looking for a baseball style hat or boonie as I want to be able to pull it down over my ears. Doesn't have to be camo or scent control but would be a plus. My search-foo has been weak. Anyone know if such a product is even made?

And if it's not... I want the rights! Ha!

Check out Outdoor Research. Not sure about their current lineup, but I have a softshell beanie I bought from them a few years back. Arc'teryx has a hardfleece beanie, too, not sure how waterproof it is, but most of the windpro headwear I've used have provided a fair amount of water resistance.

I have one that's insulated and I think Gortex as well, but I don't see them on the Carhartt website anymore. I picked it up from Sierra Trading Post a few years back, so maybe it's been discontinued. Awesome hat but a bit noisy on the head.

^^ Unbelievable hat if your looking for a watch cap (I assume for cold weather). In Wisconsin it's very cold and windy ice fishing/ late season bow. This hat is bar none the best beanie i have ever worn. I bought mine from Larue tactical. Even if you dont buy it from them, go there to get the exact model number. Absolutley worth the coin.

I have a Sealskinz beanie. I bought it last year as I'm required to be on a boat quite a bit for work, regardless of the weather conditions. I use it in combination with a Buff on my face and stay pretty warm.

I got mine on Amazon. It was not cheap for a beanie. The difference between one of these and a regular beanie is that the waterproof lining inside is a bit crinkly, and sounds like a brown paper bag. That's the best comparison I can give. It also has very little stretch. If they could fix these two hangups, it would be perfect, but maybe the technology just isn't there.

I have an Outdoor Research boonie in Mulitcam that's waterproof. Amazing hat. They also have it more discreet colors. It also packs very small into a pocket. Very well designed.

Mil spec 100% wool watch cap. Wool insulates when wet. And, I've heard that if washed in warm water and dried they shrink up to skull cap proportions and are nearly wind proof. These space age hats will set you back a cool $6 at a surplus store...

Late to the party but may I ask for what purpose? The reason, a sealed up melon cozy traps an enormous amount of body heat, OK for sedimentary work but if on the fly, an open fleece will vent off the heat that you can seal up with a hood once you stop moving. Plus, a windproof/waterproof hat over the ears in like wearing ear plugs so if you want to hear sounds in the hills, you may want something different.

Purpose is for sitting in tree stands in late season where temps are freezing and wind is pretty harsh. I figured waterproof would be a plus but after thinking about it, if it's raining that hard, I will either pull on the hood on my outer gear or be next to a cozy fireplace. Water resistant is probably better. And a balcava style that covers the neck may be in order too.

Now you are talking my speed; nice warm fire in my easy chair!

For still hunting, I think an open fleece or wool balaclava would serve you best, it will be warm but allow you to hear critters. Top with a boonie or another hat that does not cover the ears for rain. Or pull on the hood but this will still cut down on sounds to the ears just as much as a waterproof hat over the ears.

2nd the Filson. Have the "waterfowlers" cap, or something like that. It's heavy waxed canvas lined with real wool, and can be configured a couple of different ways. Wear mine all the time. Very water resistant. Can be re-coated with wax after ten years or so...

A neck gator is a huge assistance in warmth as well. Carhart makes a orange hat that is heavy fleece, has a liner for moisture and is cut with ear flaps, that aren't really flaps and will fold up for better hearing. Also has a a face guard that can be tucked into the top is not desired. Got it for Christmas and from Tractor Supply. Not to cold right now, but going out in a few to try it @25 When I get moving around, I will either use a ball cap or just pull up the heavier one onto the top of my head.
