Not wanting this to turn into a 'rat hole' conversation.

I had a Black Rain in .223 and it never really felt balanced to me. I sold it during the peak during the crazy times and made some good money.

Now that things are starting to settle down a little I am looking at getting a new one and I hope some of you experts can help.

Use:
1. Varmint
2. Home Defense
3. Plinkin'
4. And I would like to give 3 gun a try

Parameters:
1. $2k budget without optics
2. CA compliant
3. no/short wait time
4. Good reputation for accuracy/durability, good service from the manufacurer
5. low maintenance

If I try to build it myself I will end up with something that Joe Biden, Herman Munster and Oprah built together so thats not a likely option. I have searched/stalked some of the AR sites and I dont have a lot of confidence in getting unbiased feedback hence my request from the good folks here.

Thanks in advance

Try JP In Texas or RWS In Iowa or Liberty Arms In Penn. Any will build what ya want and stand behind it.
Just be sure to get a Giess. trigger In the lower of your choice

If its gonna be one and done - I'd be looking for a PWS, LWRC, KAC?, Noveske, JP Rifles?, Colt, BCM or DD

then it boils down to DI or Piston, then revisit those above.

Budget guns - Ruger or RRA or SW.

Or, build your own from parts of Each above, Mega included and spec it out. You stated not much confidence, but reality is you just need to stick with certain suppliers and grab the goods from those listed above -- when in doubt, ask. I can only assume you've hit to many forums.

ROCK RIVER ARMS ATH or
DPMS 3G1

you can get both for about $1100, maybe $1150 ish

both are amazing rifles for the money... both have 18" SS heavy barrels, 1:8twist, and performance per dollar is hard to beat. DPMS 3G1 is the most under-rated rifle on the market IMO. It has the barrel stated above with a JP trigger, JP Vtac rifle length handguard, & miculek compensator for about $1100 dollars.

I would put these two rifles up against many rifles damn near twice the price and have yet to have a FTF or FTE.

+1 on the POF. I have 3 of them 5.56, 6.8II and 7.62. All run great and the one time I had to contact POF for a problem with the 7.62, they fixed it and had it back in my hands in 4 days. Super fast turn around and fantastic gun.

Kac mod-1 or a Kac lepr. Well balanced, accurate, dependable, lots of extra's, totally ambidextrous, great looking. Jp's are awesome also, but not sure you stay around 2k..

Ultraman,
Thanks for the links and the JP seems like a good option and the LWRC seems like it might be a good option as well. Actually all the recommendations seem good but those two jumped out at me.

The JP has a 20" barrel. Is that normal for a 'race' gun or one used in 3 gun competitions? any downside?

And can someone school me on piston vs non piston?

Thanks......

Yes it is, do yourself a favor and just get the JP Enterprise. You will never regret it and once you get the JP, you will never want another rifle again except a JP. Many in here have a JP and every single one loves theirs and never has a complaint about them. I have a JP LRP-07 and would never sell or trade it for anything, I am 49 yrs old and was an expert in the Army with rifle, handgun, and Grenades, but what I am trying to say is that I have shot many different types of rifles and handguns in my life and the two best IMO were the JP Enterprise and the GAP-10. Now if your interested in Handguns take a look @ Guncrafter Industries.

Pester, in my opinion there are just three levels of AR. All the ones listed in this thread are at the top. I've shot my buddies JP and it made my plain jane run of the mill frankengun look like shit but I don't need the best of the best. I have a lefty Stag upper, Samson rail, HD lower etc.... and it has never ever failed me. I also don't put it through the paces like some other guys do with their upper echelon rifles so that's where the difference would probably show. Write down everything you want in a gun and see which ones have it all. There has to be a few in that bunch. If not, like others have said, choose the parts you want from good tried and true companies and have a qualified gun smith bring it to life.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I have a similar dilemma. I ordered a Larue PredatOBR 7.62 back in Jan 2013 and still no word on delivery. What's more, trolling the forums I cannot confirm if its true or not but I hear the OBR barrels are now going to be produced in-house. I can't conclude if that's good or bad. I am now considering ordering the JPE PSC12 18in. with captive buffer spring. The website says 8-16 weeks turn around time. Not having shot either, can anyone help me make a decision as to whether I should wait it out for the Larue PredatOBR or just cancel and order the JP PSC12? Costs are very similar give or take a few hundred $$. Plan to punch paper and use it for deer/hog hunting in TX. Thanks in advance for any input.

Update

Ended up purchasing the JP PSC12 18 inch with blue thermal dissapator, captive spring, extra long handguard, and the Magpul UBR stock. This gun rocks and shoots subMOA all day with Federal 169g Gold Match bullets. If you are in the market for a 308 semi-auto look no further than JP Enterprises. Turn around was quick and craftsmanship superb. The trigger is sweet with a short reset. It breaks like glass and I've been getting similar groups to my tikka sporter bolt action. I went ahead and ordered some DPMS 308 10 and 4 round mags for hunting. The side charging handle allows continuous "eyes" on target while chambering a bullet. This is a must for hunting. Follow up shots with the standard compensator is outstanding. Highly recommend the PSC12 for deer or hog hunting. I have a SWFA 5-20 scope on a Brobro mount. Very stable platform. I am still on the waitlist for my Larue Tactical PRedatobr. Don't know what I'll do when they call yet.

Check out PWS. Primary Weapons Systems - PWS. I bought their mk216 mod 1 for the same reasons you explained above:
Use:
1. Varmint: .308 is prob too big for your desire, but they make mk116 in .223 wylde and it is 6.5 lbs piston driven tack driver. Ask Ranger Proof or look up his blog on this forum for the mk114 and mk214.
2. Home Defense: again, 308 is prob too robust, again mk116 in .223 wylde
3. Plinkin': mk116
4. And I would like to give 3 gun a try: mk116 or 118.

Parameters:
1. $2k budget without optics: mk116 is easy to find at $18-1900
2. CA compliant: PWS makes CA legal models
3. no/short wait time: prob not happening, unless you find a gun store with them in stock. Gunbroker always has some.
4. Good reputation for accuracy/durability, good service from the manufacturer: refer to Ranger Proof blogs on this forum
5. low maintenance: Piston driven rifles have little to no required maintenance. All PWS rifles are proprietary built piston driven rifles modeled after AK operation. You will not see carbon in your chamber and that rifle will shoot anything you put through it.

Dmack (Ranger Proof) blog on Mk114 http://www.snipershide.com/shooting/snipers-hide-semi-auto-rifles/68421-pws-mk114.html

Dmack blog on MK214 http://www.snipershide.com/shooting/snipers-hide-semi-auto-rifles/89275-pws-mk214.html

You won't be disappointed. The also make 300BLK rifles and uppers for .223 wylde, .300 blk, and .308.

I agree with Elster1234, The RRA ATH is a well built accurate rifle right out of the box. You can spend a lot more and not have a better shooting rifle than the RRA ATH .

Pick out any one of the in-stock 16" Recce BCM Uppers AR-15, 16" Recce Upper Groups (Mid Length), and mate it with this LMT lower https://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=3773. And add one of theseGeissele Enhanced Combat Trigger - SSA-E
https://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=2252

And your are ready with no wait, and still well below your $2k Threshold. BCM and LMT are both outstanding mil spec AR makers.

Rainier Arms has there own gunsmithing department, so they can add the trigger and I'm sure they can neuter your lower to make it legal for the Peoples Republic
