Rifle Scopes Will I regret getting the vortex viper hs-t?

I'm building my first bolt gun. Found an unfired remington 700 AAC-sd with new badger rail for a really good price and my buddy is giving me a really nice set of rings for free that didn't for his rifle. I'm looking at the hs-t and 4-16x50 pst. I'm on a pretty limited budget so I've been looking for used ones. Am I better off saving for the pst or going with an hs-t? This will be my first scope as well for what it's worth. I started out with ar15s so I've only used red dots.

The PST is a real nice scope for the money. I haven't had my hands on a HS-T yet....so, I can't give you any opinions on it yet.
I will say that it's worth waiting for a nicer scope...as long as you can afford it. If you just want a scope right this second because you have the funds for the cheaper one...then, you may regret it later.

I won't be able to afford anything real fancy. $700 or so will be about it for the next few years. Trying to buy a house.

I have two HS-Ts.

They are good kit, basically a second focal 4-16x PST with wire reticle (vs. etched), 44mm objective (vs. 50mm), and no illumination. Buy and use with confidence.

I spoke to the UK importers a few months back and he told me that the UK police changed over to the Vortex scopes from S&B etc and them seemed quite happy with them So I dont think you are making a bad choice, In fact I have my eyes on one or two of them myself, So jump in and good luck with your new Rig,

The UK Police switched from S&B to Vortex HST/PST? Must have been some major budget cuts, or the shit is getting deep in here.

Well that would be correct, As they dont get much use over here and maybe they think it is dead money to have that kind of Kit sitting around gathering dust, but when they can but them at a cost of 5 to 1 it makes good sence and Vortex has been really putting out some good gear lately, But I would always go with All the Mark 4s just because of their strength and History.

For $700 I would look at the Weaver Tactical 3-15, it is FFP and a rock solid scope. They are going for around $600-$650 used. IMHO it has all the features of a high end scope and damn good glass for a mid level scope.

The advantage of the HS-t is it is lighter than the Weaver and cost a bit less. I feel the glass on the Weaver is better.

Hope the UK police don't have any 338 in the armory.

I'm still counting the rounds on my 6-24x50mm PST sitting on top of my Egde, close to 200 rounds now. Shooting 300gr SMKs at 2814 fps. No issue as of yet. I'll let you know when it craps out on me, as you know it's just a matter of time right? ;)

What kind of brake do you have on it?

Seems it costs more to "switch" serviceable scopes for new scopes of any brand. Franky, not sure if I believe that.

To the OP:

If you can't afford for the PST over the HST, then you probably can't afford to shoot, either. Give up shooting until you can afford it. The cost of a scope will be miniscule to what you spend on ammunition.

35 rds from 338 lm killed the one i was around. It had been rebuilt by vortex after a grueling3-400 rds of creedmoor and 308. I like my viper hs 6-24, it rides on a 12 lb 260. My friend didn't know any better to not put the pst he had on a 338. I think the hs& pst are fine on 308 and smaller. From my limited sample of 4-16 vipers(2 pst&3 hs) that were mine or friends i have to say the hs had clearer glass but the PST had a better reticle. The hs-t might be the best combo yet.

I have plenty of ammo laying around. It's not that I "cant" afford it, I'm just saving all my money for a house atm.

I checked out that scope, I really like it. Turrets look nice. Looked around at different forums, nothing for sale right now though that I saw.

Sometimes those pop up on swfa sample list. Actually there usually are some decent scopes in ur price range, have u checked them out?

The HS-T and the PST have the same glass.

Objective size, reticle type & style, and illumination are the only differences.

What's the sample list?

On another note can you guys post some pics of the hs-t on your rifles?

Here's a picture of my Savage 110 with a Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 MidwayUSA exclusive in Burris 30mm XTR low rings on a EGW 20MOA base; the Viper HS-T 4-16x44 is physically/dimensionally identical to this optic.

for 700, you can get into that 3-15x42 SS. The Weaver is definitely another I'd consider.

Well, pulled the trigger on the hs-t. I figure ill spend less now and get shooting and upgrade to something higher end down the road. I've got the meat of it at least. The guy I got the aac-sd from have me a badger rail with it and my buddy is giving me a set of nice rings for it. Have a Harris bipod I got for my ar. Next will be a new bolt knob, followed by a new stock. Probably a manners or McMillan with my bonus in February and that'll probably be it until I get a house. Should get me started at least! Can someone point me somewhere I can read about using the mrad reticle? I forgot I said but this is sadly my first scope ever.

Well now your getting into this type of gear your Jaw will drop on a regular basses and with the People here and the Internet you wont many mistakes getting your gear together, I wish it was around 30 years ago I could of saved a fortune.

That scope will serve you well, If you Buy the MilDot Version or EBR YOU MUST buy A MILDOT MASTER because it will speed up your Ranging Process and It will become your favorite piece of Kit.

Alright guys I'm gonna sound like a dumbass here so forgive my ignorance. The hs-t just showed up in the mail and like I said before this is my first scope. Just want to make sure I have this correct. So when I dial for windage and elevation it actually moves the reticle and after I dial I still aim dead center of the crosshairs and then Kentucky windage I obviously hold approximately where I would have dialed is that right? I'm a late bloomer I know.. Never had guns growing up.

Yup, you got it for the most part. More specifically though Kentucky Windage refers to wind hold overs - ie horizontal adjustment. Other than that, the HS-T dials are 0.1 mil/click, so 10 clicks would be the same as one large hash mark off of center (or 5 clicks = one small hash mark off center.)

I had the good fortune to play with one of these HS-T's (4-16x44 Mrad) out in the desert last week. Crystal. Clear. Glass. The mag adjustment was pretty stiff and the turrets as well but scope was brand new so it could have been why. Very impressed with the optic quality though. Good stuff.
