The Land Down Under
This project started at least a year ago with a rough freebie bedding block I had gifted to me for my MK2. I welded on some more ally square bar for the buttstock and screwed on some stainless RHS for the front. It wasn't bad but BLOODY HEAVY. I came to like everything about the rifle except the weight. Recently I decided to do a little something about it and set about finding an alternative to solid bar. 3mm wall RHS seemed ot be the ticket. Plenty rigid for a little rimfire and definitely light weight.

Now it took a few trials a few errors and a couple prototypes (the worst being I welded on the buttstock upside down (*cough*dumbass*cough*). Eventually I found a design and manufacturing process that was suitable for either the 22lr or 17hmr/22wmr models (I have 1 of each). I even went to the effort to make up a fixture jig for welding the 4 parts of the chassis together to guarantee they all fit and are all the same.

Now this is an ongoing project with a few additions to make but its all set up to do so. MY first one I machined a plug for the fore grip to fit inside the RHS and drilled and tapped it for a knock off versapod which works well for the little 22. The chassis also has a 1.5mm gap between the top of the recoil pad and the skins to when I get time fold up a little 1.5mm steel sling mount similar to the original AI chassis which will be held in place by the top recoil screw.

I finally got around to machining up the bolt clearance fill panel and got the whole thing cerakoted black today and bolted back together.

The only modifications the skins needed were a little trim just under the rear or the action all of about 1/4" square removed that's not visible once bolted up and the 22lr 10 rounds mag needs to have 1/2" wide and 3/4" long removed from the front of the magwell as the banana mag points forward considerably. 17hmr/22wmr versions when I get around to making them up for my other rifles will only require the little trim under the rear of the action.

I can't remember the cheek pad I used, its just some generic $8 jobby screwed to the butt. I will do something about this and maybe resin fill the rear member to drill and tap to fit it or something else with thumb screws in a quick detach type deal as the cheek rest has to be removed to insert/remove the bolt and I have once forgotten my allen key :(

I also had the barrel threaded and a thread protector made up which doubles as a mount for a bit of carbon fibre tube which is held snug at the other end with a couple orings around the barrel to finish off the look.

I'm pretty happy with where things are now. The weight is much better than the last version. The pointability (is that a word?) is absolutely brilliant. It balances well and shoots nicely off bags or the bipod or the ute roof or freehand or whatever. Its got a cheap rail screwed on the side temporarily to mount a torch for walking round the paddocks chasing some of them waskilly wabbits to feed the mutts. Needs something better but needed a torch mount at short notice and that's what I ended up with.

I'm thinking I'd like to get FDE skins for the varmint 22wmr which will be next to get the treatment. Maybe give the whole rifle a lick of cerakote to take the stainless gloss of it. I wouldn't mind trying out a set of thumbhole skins rather than the pistol grips but being in Australia I'll have to take whatever I can get as I can't find any on the shelves here and I don't think the thumbholes are still available new. Couple that with the Mrs would kill me if I bought more "gun shit" for the next month or so will just have to keep looking (unless anyone has some here they wanna offload? Not too worried about condition, Used but not abused would do me.

Anyways here it is. Not the best photos but didn't haven't had time to do better after taking it out for a shoot this morning and Cerakoting the chassis late this afternoon. The photo more front on is the previous heavy ass chassis and the old scope but have included that to show the carbon barrel tube (which serves no other purpose than cosmetics) and the bipod which has been move to the new rig.

New bolt knob fitted and a Vortex PST 2.5-10x44 on top to complete the package.

Savage 22 in viperskins pics

Here's a couple better pics. Pretty sure everyone knows what viperskins look like anyways.

If anyone is interested I'd be keen to swap a couple chassis for a couple sets of skins.

Fitting any accessories is as easy as removing the front cap and either drilling a hole thru the chassis and fitting a nut on the inside or tapping the chassis then probably fitting a nut inside anyway. Basically the same process to fit a butt pad. Drill and tap to suit your buttpad bolts and fit a locknut on the inside.

I'm in the drawing stages for this same project. If you don't mind do you think you could take a couple pictures of the mag well on there. I've got most of the stuff figured out but I am still trying to figure out the mag well.
Good job on the project.
Hows it shoot too?

thats definitely bad ass! good job.

show some pics of the chassis on how you dropped in the action

i had plans to do this using a WELLS G96 airsoft chassis and buying the Viperskins to bolt it on.

My mag well currently has nothing in it. Its a finishing touch yet to be addressed. Thinking some 5mm Delrin on the back and sides. ITs only a $300 gun here so haven't been too keen to go to the nth degree with everything. Gotta keep it in perspective. Shoots insanely well (for a $300 gun) 50 yards with the bipod under 1/2" 5 shots is common . 1/2" - 3/4" is the norm for 10 shots. 1" I shoulda got more sleep. All with cheap Highland HV hunting ammo. Never tried any target ammo or anything more than $50 a brick in it as that's not what I use it for. For comparison (as I don't know what ya'll pay for it in the US but Lapua ammo here is $25 a pack. I really can't complain about the gun at all. Its a keeper.

Aaahhh. If only airsoft was legal here, that woulda been so much easier. (ps. wanna sell the old skins if you do? or do away with the plastic chassis and trade me some skins for one of these :D :D ) Don't have any pics currently and I've gotta partly remove the skins to remove the action which is a lot of work. Basically the RHS has all but 4.5mm removed from the top and small tapers removed to match the skins. The bottom is milled out to fit the trigger assembly and the magazine. I mill out enough to suit both 22lr and 17hmr/22wmr mags and the little extra is covered by the factory bottom metal. There are 4mm plates fitted between the RHS and the action lugs to get the right height and make room for one of the crossbolts of the skins which actually sits just underneath the lugs.

I've got another one about 80% done for my 22wmr so I'll snap a few extra pics of that one and update here once I get some skins for it.

I've ordered a set of camo skins and a couple cheek pieces from victor company. Hopefully usps and ozpost get their shit together so I can get my hands on them soon to mix up a suitable cerakote colour for the next chassis and the barreled action.

Hopefully this works and I get the right order.

Kinda like a big jigsaw puzzle waiting to be put together.

A little mock up and it looks something like this. You'll notice 3 action screw holes, which I use instead of the 2 used in normal stocks. Holds everything super firm and any form of bedding the action doesn't seem to be necessary. My mk2 22 shoots better with this arrangement than it did in any other stock I tried.
20130830_232710-1.jpg

The Chassis requires spacing up for a couple reasons. To give clearance to the bolt above the skins and one of the thru bolts that holds the skins in place kinda sits just under one of the action lugs. Bedding of the lugs may or may not be required depending on how flat and true the action lugs are from factory.
20130830_232825-1.jpg

In the jig to weld it all up to make sure its all perfectly in place. The part of the buttstock that sleeves inside the action block also gets welded internally.

A few mostly made up. The 2 at the front have been wet glass bead blasted to remove linishing marks and give the surface a consistent texture before being garnet blasted for Cerakote.

I like how that turned out. It looks like it came from the factory in that chassis. Let us know how it works once you get it bedded, and some rounds down range.

Na, not really doing them for sale. Just a tinkerer. I've got 3 of them myself and a couple mates want one. Just enjoy the challenge of making stuff myself especially if it's not something available

What would be the average cost on these builds? By the way, Beautifully done!!

17hmr. Still waiting on new rings to turn up and need to cerakote the chassis and bolt handle. Anyone know how they come out?

ZombieSlayer, man I've been working on a project like this for over a year and the guy producing the chassis just can't get around to it. I have the the mk11 e-receiver, the skins and buttstock, just need the chassis . I'm in Victoria, how can I get one of these off you?

you gotta sell a limited run of these

Wow. You joined 4 years ago and today is your first post. Way to lurk.

A few for sale I guess could happen. I do require some new glass for my 30. Anyone in Australia send me a PM as I have a couple completed with skins that are for sale in sand, green or multicam.

Anyone in the US interested send me a pm and see what happens. Definately not going to be making them into the future. I've got a little material left and once it's gone it'll be game over as I'm rather busy with everything else in life so this would be a one time thing.

I'd prefer a single postage and someone stateside to fwd them on as postage of a single one at a time is gonna run the costs up but 3-4 in a single box probably wouldnt be so bad. So likely need persons with reputable history and trading ratings. I could do the majority of the work leaving them to be user finished to save my time and your money. So supplied with an adapter for a grippy cheekpad but requiring the holes for skin atachment to be drilled and coating to be done and you to fit a buttpad of your choice. Just thinking out loud and throwing out an option. If a group PM is doable here then do that to keep eveyone up to date. If theres not enough interest then it'll get scrapped. IF theres too much it'll be first in first served. be game over.

I had to laugh out loud right here. Seriously, some of us lost all our posts in the great shuffle of 2013!

How do you use the classifieds then? Better let the mods know to do something about it. This is an outrage. :p

Explains why your spamming my thread eh post wh©®€. Ha, I kid.

Here's the trio.
