I am getting closer to having my build done. Hopefully withing the next couple of weeks I will get it out. I have decided to go with PCR. While talking to him I've decided to go with a Bartlein 1/10 twist barrel. Looking for some guy/gals who are shooting .308 with 1/10 twist. I am trying to decide on what length barrel to go with. I dont want to go 26" for sure this will mainly be for hunting, and shooting paper out to 600. But I would like to get a much speed out of it as I can. I have read on here about having a tight bore which helps with velocity. Is this true? If so what will I have to do on my part to load for a tight bore? So what barrel length are you all shooting, and what speeds are you getting? Thanks guys any info would be greatly appreciated! KJ

First off I can't tell you these speeds are out of a chrono but what Ballistic AE is telling me after I trued it. My barrel is a Brux 1:10 MTU finished just shy of 23 inches with the brake. I do almost all my shooting suppressed, but my trued muzzle velocity outta this barrel with FGMM 175's is 2628. Hope that helps. I've shot out to 1012 yards with the fgmm 175's and it performed really well.

Had PCR build my last rifle with a 20" Bartlein 5R, M24 contour, 1/10 twist on a Bighorn action. Shooting factory M118LR I am getting a MV of 2700. 600+m with this set up is incredibly easy to do. I was shooting a 621m 12" swinging square plate yesterday and it was impacting hard enough to make it swing/bounce violently. If PCR is doing your build, you will be pleasantly surprised at how well it shoots, they do incredible work.

I have a 20" Broughton that is pushing a 175smk @ 2690, this barrel is 19+ from the lug and I have no problem getting to a grand

I'm shooting a 20" pushing 175 smk right below 2600 fps. It's not that fast but it gets me to 1000 if you are going to be hunting with it I would go with a 22 or 24" barrel just to gain a little more velocity.

My 24" Sporter barrel on my 700 Classic stocked 308 gets 2726fps with 178 HPBTs, I'd talk to Frank Green about what bore size you'd wanna go with, he being the expert about Bartleins.

RE: .308 with 1/10twist barrel?

I too had a hard time deciding the length to go with and after hours of reading and research I settled with a happy medium of 23 1/2" from bolt to brake. It's 26" with the JP brake. Rem Model 7 with Shilen SS. 1/10 twist varmint contour. Very happy with my decision!

I've shot Black Hills 175's at 1k with a 18.5" 1/10 barrel. If you need the specific elevation adjustments, let me know.

The nice thing about a 308 is it performs well with a short barrel unlike a lot of other calibers. A 20 inch barrel is all you need for 600 yards. If you are interested in a tight bore get the bartlein 10 twist that goes on the Gladius from GA precision. Although the Gladius is 18 inches you can have them cut it to 20. That is what I did and it is a nice shooter.

Winchester brass, CCI200s, 44.6gr Varget, 2.800" oal, and its 2730fps not 2740(memory getting bad)

Or, if you want a load that wont make your bolt stick and you wont need a hammer to get the fucking thing open, 47.3grs of 2000MR with remington brass, a primer of your choice, I use WLRs or CCIs, can use a few tenths more of 2000MR with Win brass. And you'll be able to get your bolt open every time.:)

I don't have those issues, and certainly would not recommend a load if I had...

OCW work up, even the 45.1 load opened up easily...

I'm running Berger 175 BT longrange targets .005 off the lands with 47.7grs of Power Pro 2000MR with no pressure problems .
Barrel is a Krieger 1-10 at 22. Laod out of my gun is in the tenths

11.25 twist .299 bore 18.5" Bartlein still had 175 SMKs coming in point first at 1500 yards. I personally don't think I'd go with a 10 twist unless I was planning on running heavier than 190s out of a 308.

Totally related but tie in bullet weight. Lots of 175's in this post. Same deal too, PCR. I shoot mainly 168's due to the fact Hornady and FGMM 168's are everywhere, no so much for 175' at least not in my area.

If your deal is to shoot paper groups, just plain ole range time and 3 inch targets, still 1:10 twist for "precision" paper punching only or go to 1:11 or even stick with 1:12?

I get 1:10 is optimal for 175 up through the big boys, but for the 168"s where precision is the stated goal?

There is no real world drawback to going with a 10 twist for the lighter bullets. Every 300 win mag has a 10 twist barrel and there are plenty of ammo offerings in 150 through 178 grain bullets for it. Spinning a bullet faster is usually a good thing.
Going with a 10 twist barrel in a 308 gives the shooter more flexibility in ammo selection.

16.5" getting 2575 with 175smks.

It'll go 600 yards easily

1/10 or 1/12 will shoot the mid weight 168s and 175s easily. 1/10 let's you shoot the 208s 220s etc.

Where are you looking at? You have SouthWest Ammunition just down the road in Mesa kicking out 175's and all the other popular 308 loads all the time.
