Hey everyone, I'm starting to think about my next long range rig and am torn between these two rounds.

What I have-
SS l/a Rem 700 w/mag face
Lilja .284 1-8" light Palma that'll finish @30"
Already have about 200 pieces of once fired FC 7mmRM brass and a redding deluxe 3 die set, but if the crowd leans toward the WSM I may go that route.

Will be going with a Manners stock w/mini chassis for this one
Also need opinions on what brake to use, want something with minimal dust signature and if it doesn't direct ALL the noise back to the shooter that's a plus as well.

So what are your experiences with these two chamberings in custom rifle platforms? I've owned both in factory rifles and haven't seen much difference in performance there.

Thanks

Steve

I went 7rm as I just don't have the time to worry with brass availability. The 7 WSM fixes most of the 7RM shortcomings but it is not worth it to me. I think the Long Action would be preferred for either so might as well go with the far more universal 7rm. Running 72gr retumbo under a 162 Amax and am extremely please with the results. I load way out, to 3.45.

I'll be loading way out there with Berger 168's and 180's if they'll shoot for me. What's your barrel length and what velocity are you getting with the 162's?

I am 28" in an XLR Chassis, I do not have a chrono but best I can figure I am close to 3200. I run berger 180s as well, my guess is somewhere between 2900-3000.

I ran a 24" 7RM with 168 Bergers and it was a laser! I had ZERO issues with mine. With a brake, it kicked barely more than my 260. After firing both calibers you mentioned in similar rifles, it felt like the 7WSM had more recoil? Maybe since the case is shorter/fatter it causes the powder column to burn faster? IDK... Either one will make you happy, but I'd shoot 168 Bergers instead of the 180's if it were me.

I shoot a 7wsm in a M70 SA built by gap. They throated it for the Berger's and I've pushed the 180's over 3,000fps. I've never had an issue getting the Berger's to shoot. I load them to 2.2475" base to ogive. I have a 26" MTU barrel with Titan muzzle break and recoil is very manageable.

I picked the 7WSM over all the others that were available. The only other 7mm that I really enjoy is my 284 Win. For me, the 284 is easiest to load for but the performance of the 7WSM at distance with the 180gr Berger's is hard to resist.
With a suppressor my recoil is on par with my 300WM suppressed. Maybe a little less.

I choose the 7WSM over the others as well and I have no regrets, I shoot a 28" Bartlein 1:9 and send 180 VLD'S @ 3020 and it's a blast to shoot took it out to 1876 2 wks ago. It's my favorite caliber to shoot.

I don't have much input on which cartridge to go with, but I have heard the 7wsm is pretty slick, as seen above from a few people liking theirs. However, I can recommend a muzzle brake. My buddy put an APA fat bastard on his 300win mag and the thing barely has any recoil and minimal dust signature (just ports on the side)/noise directly at the shooter. Granted it is loud but the percussion isn't really aimed back at the shooter, but rather to the side.

Here is a video of how well the APA fat bastard reduces recoil.

I chose the 7WSM....It's a GREAT cartridge!!! I can push the high B.C. bullets: 162 AMAX to 3150fps and the 180 Bergers to 2950-3000fps. It has even lower drop that me .338 Lapua. See the picture for my custom Savage in 7WSM and my Surgeon .338 with the Fat Bastard muzzle brake....that brake really does reduce recoil pretty well. IMG_20130907_013830.jpg

Ballistic twins. No advantage either way.

I had both at one time. Still have the RM.

OP, considering you have a L/A and dies for the RM, I would stay the course with the RM. You won't be disappointed.

If I had to choose I would go with the 7WSM. Short throw is one of the things I am a big fan of. With that being said, the 7Rem is a fantastic caliber. The 7WSM is a newer chamber, so maybe a little more modern tech in case design(maybe???). Both are great, but I perfer short throws over long throws
