16-18 inch shorty rifles

Old 700 PSS that I picked up on consignment for $500. Chopped to 16" and put it in a McRee Compact Folder. Shortly thereafter I didn't feel much need for my other bolt guns.

Well played sir! it's actually back at PCR having the rails and bipod coated..as for glass its either sell a testicle or bed some old rich lady. Hopefully I can get a Mark 6 on it soon

I had that exact plan as you for the 18" in a Manners folder, with MK6 on top. Spent about 3 months looking for the TF4, and ended up running across a Whiskey 3 chassis. The gun should be getting finished up in a week or 2, and the MK6 is in my safe waiting. It's running a 18" Rock chambered for 6.5CM though.

Sounds like a nice stick. A 6.5 in a Whiskey 3 is next on my list. Post up some pics when you get it together. Best of luck

hey do you have to engrave the action for sbr? and whats the wait time? can you put on different barrels shorter than 16in with just 1 action?

Yes. The receiver or the barrel needs to be engraved with your (or your trusts) info. Wait time is 8+ months right now. Yes, you can put different barrels and calibers on it at your discretion. There is no legal requirement to notify the ATF of such changes, but they do ASK that you notify them if the changes are permanent.......I would avoid since it isnt a requirement, your setup might change, and it takes time away from them doing their real job of approving transfers.

Also should I build a 223 AI with rem 700 or tikka action? keep the tikka stock and just put a scope on it and shoot? Or rem 700 stock? I just want a short 223 to shoot 80gr bullets. (I know I'll have to get a new barrel in a faster twist) I'd build it like this x action with barrel made locally with 1:7 twist, manners stock carbon fill mcs-t, timney trigger, ptg bottom metal for AI mags.

My 16" 223 Savage in an XLR chassis. A huge thanks to Kyle at XLR industries for the warranty work after I fell of the cliff with this package. Chassis held up to my 230# drop on the rifle and I only broke the mag release lever off after trying to impale myself on it. New parts from XLR and I am shooting .2moa at 100y again! A great system that holds up to some crazy whoops!

Has anyone chopped a Remington LTR fluted barrel or any fluted barrel?

one day I dream of having one of these. I've shot one and I was shooting at 150yards prone on about 2.5in little popper and I hit all 5 shots with some bulk swedish match 308 ammo in the same area, it had a very nice trigger and feel of the rifle. It made me want to shoot all day

Remington 700
PT&G bottom metal
B&C stock
Barrel is factory, cut down to 17.5"
SWFA SS fixed 10x

Nice color scheme, and set up, any speed data in that 17.5? How loud compared to say a 22?

Yep, my mvp is fluted and chopped on the fluting. Jus make sure if you decide to finish the barrel with a muzzle device that its outside diameter is wider then or equal to the barrel or you will end up with rough and horrible looking finish

Building both at the same time and not finished with either yet, but a pair of 18" .308's for my son (7 YOA) and step-son (14 YOA)....

Like to hear specs, contour/twists, etc. on bbls above in those two - thanks.

Like to hear specs, contour/twists, etc. on bbls above in those two - thanks.

Last year I purchased a 10 pack of used Hart Palma barrels in different contours and all were 1:11 to 1:13 twists. I have four sons and a daughter that will eventually need "first rifles" so these should suffice. I built a budget "shortie" hunting rifle with a used 30" Palma barrel that I cut down to 17.5" and it is one of the best shooters I have so I am really impressed with the life in these barrels once cut and rechambered. The top one is my 7 year old's and it is a medium Palma taper and is 1:13 twist it is in a McMillan Hunter Stock I got here on the Hide.

The bottom is a heavy Palma and 1:12 twist with a Choate varmint stock I picked up for $150 that was already duracoat'd.

Thanks, I could tell the upper looked more like a 700 V contour and lighter than the lower which looks like a straight taper, they should shoot great! Thanks for sharing and enjoy those rifles.

Mark @ SAC just did this one for me

bartlein barrel @ 18.5" 308 5R

Lazy,
You're always showing off toys... the ones you have gotten rid of are far better than most of the ones I've even seen in person. That sir, makes you a bastid! seriously nice stick though

So much love in the air Strike :)

A real shorty - built around an XP100 pistol on fiddleback walnut bullpup stock, milled in the 70's.

Chambered in .308 with 16" barrel plus brake. Little guy is 34" overall and will still do 1/2" @ 100.

A dandy little brush gun for deer and hogs. Fun one-of-a-kind build. Call it a REM7 Bull Pup.

Very nice to see something different. I've never been a fan of thumb hole stocks but yours certainly fits in with other XPs.
Thanks for posting it up!

If you have never tried a 16" - 18" bolt action then you are missing out. Short stiff barrels, easy to carry. Also to me they seem somewhat less ammo picky. And yes they can still reach out there a fair bit!

Yeah, I'm not big on the XP100 pistol or the thumbhole, but this combination just intrigued me. So I built it using an old junk REM7 XP action. To my knowledge, only two of the bull pup stocks were ever milled way back when by these nice folks out in Kansas. Final sculpting, fitting, smithing, glass bedding and finishing left up to me. But the little sucker shoots straight.

Check out their stuff. Absolutely gorgeous custom work in all makes; almost too pretty to shoot.

They rightfully tout themselves as the "finest benchrest rifle maker" around.

I've seen a few carbine stocks for the XPs, just never one actually assembled. If it shoots straight you can't ask for anything more. Just kill every single pig you can.

Now if only it accepted AICS mags... :)

After looking through this thread I really want to cut the barrels on my bolt guns.

6.5 creedmoor 18" 1/8 twist Saturn

6,5texas.shooter, that is a nice looking rifle. what kind of velocity are you getting out of that Creedmoor and what bullets?

Icedragonmx, that too looks sweet. I have a savage .223 and an xlr and want to chop my .223 barrel and put it in the xlr if it doesn't sell shortly. I just don't know if I should cut the factory barrel or just wait until I can get a 1:7" chambered in .223AI.

Love this thread.

Ok, so its not a bolt gun, but its 18". 40" OAL with the suppressor attached. Thats the same length of my Rem700 in the Manners T4 stock without a suppressor. Was built for harvesting deer in my neck of the woods. Short shots, tight forest, and suppressor friendly. Most compact OAL was goal, and single shots cannot be beat. Im still playing with scopes and mounts. Will probably get a Zeiss Duralyt mounted on a EGW base and rings. The talley, while nice, do not allow enough fwd movement to get the scope away from my face and still have it supported correctly. Thats the downfall with single shots.....everything is much closer to your head.

Nice set up, so I assume it was chopped? In 308? What kind of accuracy are you seeing and have you done any mods to trigger or pin?

Yup, 308. Adco cut it for me. I set it up this way for deer in my area.....and distance is not possible. Its zeroed at 100yrds but ive never had to shoot more than 50. Accuracy (with me shooting) is 1" at 100. I would love to find somebody to do a trigger job on it. Know anybody?

Thought about a cantilever mount? Such as a Bobro or SWFA? That would allow full support while gaining the necessary eye relief
