Just wondering how far out you guys are pushing the .260. I've always shot .308 but I'm thinking about building a .260. How do these two rounds compare past 1,000? How about .260 vs .300W past 1,000?

You can really get a .260 or other 6.5mm variant to have an edge over .308WIN in a huge area of range. Shooting light bullets like the 123s inside of 500 yards is a pleasure and shooting the heavier 136-142s past 1000 yards really has an edge over .308WIN if you've got the velocity. But compared to a .300WM at distance, it's a different story. You're talking about significantly more mass at similar velocities, which means more inertia, less wind deflection and more energy on target. If you want an alternative to .308WIN that you can take from 100-1200 yards, a .260 is a great choice. But if you're wanting to get to a mile, for example, a .300WM makes more sense than a .260.
Totally do it? Funny but this was a question I raised to Dogtown perhaps six months ago. I decided to make the move to 260 on his and another friends advice. I still shoot 308 amongst other things but once shooting over 600 yards with 260 you will immediately see a nice performance difference. 260 is awesome and you wont look back. It's not bad on barrels and a very very accurate caliber. Best thing is if you have a 308 all you have to do is switch out the barrel.
To answer the OP, I have shot out to 1300+ with it and it hits with authority and remains very accurate at that distance.

Great article! Can you run .260s with the Magpul 7.62 Pmags?! I might be sold if so.
Im not sure about Pmags but it should work with anything that could hold a 308 for example if your going off of SAMI spec and sticking to an OAL of 2.800 inches then your good to go. So in other words the case and length of both the 308 and 260 are identical.
I don't see why it would not work in a Pmag.
Example: It woks in my 308 AI mags just fine.

I shot my .260 this weekend out to 1585y just to see if I could. I had a few hits on the 24x24" target but they were tumbling at that point. I was shooting 139g Scenars at 2775 fps. On the other hand, my 338's were removing paint very nicely.
I'm running Lapua 123's and Norma 130's through PMAGS.
