Hi guys,

Just wanted to get some feedback on customizing a Sako S491 .222 sporter I want to to convert to a .223 with 1 in 8 twist barrel.
What barrel lengths and barrel contours would you suggest. I'm going to try to put it in a McMillan A5. Would like to at least reach 600yds with this gun.
Any input would be appreciated.

Cheers

Martin

I wouldn't even think of destroying a 491 Sako, sell it and buy a .223 that meets your needs off the shelf.

My thoughts, too. I think the 491 will look "overwhelmed" in an A5.

I placed an order for A5 to replace my nice laminated stock on my sako 75 varmint 223..also i wanted to rebarel from the 1:12 varmint to 1:7.7.you got mi thinkin.. should i? It does shoot great tho

The A5 is my favorite long range varminter stock, but I think the size of the 491 action will look too dainty in the available space of the A5. I could be wrong. But, the size of the 491 action kinda dictates the maximum diameter of the barrel that you could use and I think the A5 needs a Remington varminter / sender size as a minimum to look balanced. Maybe use a Sako Varminter stock?

If I was going to get an aftermarket stock for it I would drop it in the McMillan Sako varmint stock. I have used 2 of them for builds and like them very well.
