A buddy of mine is selling a SA M1A in excellent condition. This was a Government issue rifle back in the day. Has the 6 digit serial number with the original 6-20x56 Mil Dot illuminated Springfield marked scope on it. I don't know a lot about these rifles, but trying to get a feel on what I should offer him. He is asking $4500 for the whole package with 4 extra mags.

Any thoughts out there?

4500 is just plain silly from what I can tell by your pic. Looks to be a black plastic stock with the SS barrel, this to me says loaded m1a. Scope is 650$$ the rifle is about 2000 new. Better pics would help.

Way too much. The receiver may be older, but I doubt the SS barrel and stock are original.

For a used rifle, and not knowing anything about it, I wouldn't go over $1500 for the package - nothing original about that scope. Loaded M1A are closer to $1200, but with the SS barrel it could maybe be worth a little more. Again, with knowing nothing except a poor picture, and lacking all serial numbers, $1500 max and that's being generous

Good luck they are nice rifles.

I gave 1400 for an almost new 1994 year national match with 7 gi magazines last fall.

Gov't issue, huh? And which gov't exactly was this rifle "issued" to "back in the day?" ;) As it sits now...it was NOT issued to ANY government (at least in the US) in that condition.

Scope and mount are both JUNK! That's the Springfield Armory mount (two-screw...maybe Gen II...hard to tell from that pic) which is notoriously poor compared to higher quality mounts like Sadlak, etc. The scopes, while some people seem to have good luck with them...are generally NOT good. The glass is pretty sub-par (hazzy, yellowish tint on some models), the adjustments aren't always true/accurate, but they are FFP which is nice even for an otherwise garbage optic. They were made for SAI by Hakko in Japan who still services the scopes if there is a problem with them. Service is iffy at best and generally isn't worth the time/effort/frustration to deal with it. I can't tell if the bipod is an original or a cheap, ChiCom knockoff.

Nothing about that rifle is "sniper" or even "sniperish" in fact. The awesome "6-digit" serial number you seem to be basing your claims (or the seller is basing his claims) on it being "government issue back in the day" doesn't mean squat in terms of its previous "service" and in fact, it hasn't likely EVER served anything except on the civilian side of the market (i.e. - if its as SAI receiver, a 6-digit serial would be expected and hardly "old" by any measure). Since you likely have the serial number or pics of it, you can request info direct from SAI about the "history" of the rifle in terms of how it left Springfield (i.e. - bare receiver, barreled action, complete rifle and if so, the configuration it shipped in, etc.). If you want to provide the serial range, such as 123xxx, or a pic of the receiver heel (with all or at least the first 3-4 numbers of the serial) then we can likely get you in the ballpark as to when it was actually produced, but SAI can give you the specifics.

At present...$4500 is WAY out of line based on the limited data you have provided thus far in the condition the rifle at least appears to be sitting in now. More info and we can likely get you a little better idea of what you can expect to pay, but I wouldn't piss on that rifle if it was on fire at $4500. ;)

How well do you know your friend? He's either taking you for a ride...or was taken himself and is passing along the BS without knowing.

That is a newer loaded model with stainless barrel in a commercial non-usgi black synthetic stock with rubber butt pad looks like to me. The scope is worth 500-600 on ebay tops and the mount is worth 50$. The rifle retails for about 1700 new. Not government issue.

Hopefully your friend didn't spend 4k on it...

Some friend...

No - that is not a fair price.. by more than double.

Yeah...definitely contact SA, Inc to find out the exact vintage of this rifle. A plethora of USGI parts would usually indicate an older rifle and possibly higher value. But not that high.

FYI...it wasn't even going to cost that much for me to have a NM M14 built off a lugged receiver, CMP parts kit, Kreiger barrel, and McM stock.

Thanks for all the feedback. I was thinking it was way to hi, but thought that here might be something about the serial number and such.
I will talk to him about it. He is a good guy and there might be something else I am not understanding or info I do not have.
