Just got stationed in El Paso, any advice for hunts? Open to all and any advice.

I never saw anything besides coyotes and jackrabbits and rattlesnakes when I was in Ft. Bliss in the 60's. All tasty....

I live about 200 miles (which is not far at all in this part of the world) southeast of El Paso, in the Big Bend region of Texas. I've been here for 28 years now and have been lucky enough to have friends who own ranches or work on ranches and allow me to hunt on their property. At times in the past, I have also helped with guiding hunts out here. I have killed whitetail (including coues deer), mule deer, auodad, javelina, mountain lions, coyotes and feral hogs. We also have elk here, but I have not personally killed one. Unfortunately, however, if I did not have personal contacts who invited me to hunt on their land, I would likely not have had any of these opportunities as most hunts in this area go for big dollars. If you have the ability to pay, I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to line something up, but public hunting opportunities are rare. There are a few drawn hunts on state land through Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept., but you must register for the drawings well ahead of hunting season.

I have done some bird hunting in New Mexico, but I have never done any big game hunting there. I'm not very familiar with the system in New Mexico, but I do know there is a lot of BLM land there which offers public hunting opportunities. You might want to inquire with locals around El Paso to see if they can give you the scoop on how to get in on some of that. I'm sorry I can't give you anything more encouraging, but I know a lot of local guys who simply can't hunt around here due to the unavailability of public opportunities and the high prices of purchasing hunts. As I said, I've been here for 28 years now and it took me several years before I linked up with the right people in order to get access to land to hunt on. If you seek out the right folks, you might get lucky and establish some contacts who can get you on the land. Good luck with it!

E9diver, live about 4 hours east of El Paso. I know that is not very close but if you want to go shoot some varmints or deer hunt may be able to help. Let me know and will try to work something out.

I don't own any land directly but my very close friend has a ranch and may be able to work something out. Will not cost you anything other than some gas and maybe something for you to eat. I can't make any promises since it is not my land but I will try to help.

Thanks for your service .

I run an outfitting business based out of El Paso and I would be willing to trade a hunt or two in exchange for work.
I need feed pens built, help keeping feeders full, brush cleared from the roads etc. Shoot me a Pm if interested.

Great offer Mike! I've hunted Aoudad with Mike (unfortunately came home empty handed) and can verify he's a stand up guy and has some good areas to hunt. Nothing like trading a little hard labor for hunting access, nice offer.

I live in southern NM and there is great hunting in the state. Tags for non-residents are difficult to draw but I recall they have some hunts reserved for active duty military. Since you are so close to WSMR you may want to check what Oryx hunts are available on range. Go to the NM Game and Fish website to see what hunts are available. They have a proclamation listing the hunts online although the 2014 Proclamation may not be published yet. Good luck.

E9Diver, I live here in El Paso. I've only really hunted rabbit and hogs. A buddy of mine found a guy who will let us hunt on his property North of Van Horn for a small fee. He is working out the details. Coyote, hogs, etc...
