Was thinking of a regular 6r Krieger barrel in 7mm for my 7 Rem Mag build but was curious about the 5r stuff only for the following:

I assume accuracy between 5r and 6r is the same with no advantages to either.

I guess that between 5r and 6r there is a slight FPS advantage that goes to the 5r due to a lower friction coefficient? Maybe?

Any other great 7mm barrels out there? (stainless of course)

I think standard Kriegers are 4 groove.

Best advice I can give is choose whatever "groove count" barrel you can get your hands on SOONEST. It makes very little difference.

Allegedly, 5R barrels clean easier, but every 4, 5 and 6 groove barrel I've had has been plenty easy to clean.

Velocity is not appreciably different either.

I have a McGowan on mine and I have liked it enough to have a new one sitting in the safe for when the current one finally goes south.

So there is NO difference in bullet friction or speed between 4, 5 or 6 rifling?

Well what the hell is the point of different rifling if 6 has worked since steel was invented? Its gotta do SOMETHING. Right?????

Ive got a Krieger 5r rifled barrel on my 7mm rem mag. I am extremely happy with it. Its a 26" heavy target with a 8.5 twist.

Good luck,
Merritt

Ordering a 7mm 1:9 twist select match grade barrel with a #7 standard varmint contour from Shilen.

Probably not gonna see it till next fall, but thats okay. I can wait.

7mm barrel choices-

Barrel makers that offer a 'match grade'...do not make a match grade.

Well if Shilen barrels are junk, im sure someone would have chimed in about it.

In other news, thinking about the 162g AMAX Hornady bullet for this combo- has a great BC and while the weight isn't what I would really like to see, its up there. I have heard rumors of this bullet going unstable after 600 yards (like the 168g .30 cal stuff) and wanted to know if anyone could confirm. I need a bullet capable of carrying out to 1000+ and not keyhole my target. If my 1:9 twist isn't fast enough, I would like a recommendation NOW so I can call and have the twist changed before my barrel is made. Thanks.

162 amax is good to go for 1000+ yards from a 1-8.5 or 1-9 barrel.

They're also out of production, currently. Unknown when Hornady will resume.

Ha. That figures. Well, I'll wait and see if they pick that bullet back up. I really hope so. It would be a shame to see such a nice bullet get killed off. If it doesn't come back, Berger has some nice bullets out there. Thanks for the reply.

You guys WON'T believe it, but I got an email from Shilen about my barrel- guess they had one laying around somewhere that was unearthed!! (or they made one real quick, but I doubt that) and its supposedly on the way! Whoop!

Quicksilver, NO friction difference on the bullet. You are working with a set bore diameter, the lands on the rifling on a 5 rifle are broader than they would be on a 6 rifle. Basic geometry, the more lands you have, the narrower they have to be, But the total land surface would work out to be about the same. I had a shilen barrel once, good barrel, but will never use them again, they now make their barrels in Spain.

Um... where did you hear that? As it turns out, this world is incredibly damn small- my mother works at the pharmacy in Seven Points, and knew Mrs. Shilen (sorry I suck with names) before she passed away. I was talking to my mother friday about my barrel coming in when she told me she knows Ed Shilen. Long story short, Ed doesn't make the barrels in Spain.
