Just treated myself to a new LH 700 V. 26" 1-12 twist bbl. While waiting for my scope I decided to get some bullet seating depth for load development. THAT'S when my plans crashed. To seat a 175 SMK .040 [a starting point] off the lands ONLY about .050 of the .308 Dia. bullet will be in the case neck. I'm used to this sort of crap with T/C pistol barrels but am greatly disappointed in Rem. especially seeing how this is THEIR entry level target rifle.

par for the course. I still don't know how long I would have to load to touch the lands. A 220 SMK won't touch while still in the brass. I load mine to 2.950" OAL with 175 smk's in lapua brass over 43.5 varget. My sps-v will shoot around 3/8 moa on most days. Almost always under 1/2". It is a factory barreled action, but I did have to replace the stock. the factory stock is junk as you probably know.

Yep seat to 2.82" COAL with 168 or 175 SMK's (or 167 / 185 Lapua Scenars) you'll be good to go. These rifles can be capable of very good accuracy with long throated factory barrels.

I never came across a bullet that would be in the ideal range to the lands. I did find amazing accuracy out of the entry level 700 sps rifles though, even with the long jump. Agree with just load to book oal.

as said, long thorats, my rem 700s perfer a amax over the SMK 700pss that loves the 178 at 2.820-.2825 I run H380 powder as the rifle hated varget get a scope on it, go to the range and enjoy it. If you are very worried, and it doesnt shoot, talk to Mark at SAC for a sps package..
Good Luck
