Who here has given up....

Methinks you are seeing what you want to see.

No one here cares what you shoot, or what you want to shoot, only folks refuting the statement that the round is useless. .

Show me where I said the round is "useless." You can't.

I said its good for combat, and 3-gun.

How about you not put words in my mouth, and then get "bent" at me about what I never said? Deal?

And how about not trying to tell me what I saw, when you weren't there? Just trying that you destroy your own credibility.

As for the leaf incident, persons who have even the slightest grasp of external ballistics don't need to witness it, as they understand that its not possible, regardless of what you think you saw.

.

Actually, anyone who has even the slightest grasp of ballistics knows that once a bullet hits something, were no longer dealing with external ballistics, and just about everything becomes possible.

The OP has several threads that can best be described as the internet equivalent of the woman who wears skimpy clothes and then complains about attracting too many lingering stares.

I've kind of come to the same conclusion. If it weren't for the fact that he keeps responding one might just think of him as a Troll.

Right now I'm leaning more to "Post Whore" or "30 year old still living in his mother's basement who loves controversy".

Can't discuss facts, so yer gonna go the name calling / insult route?

I'm done here. Its been fun.... out.

How is it not good for combat? I posted pictures of combat results last time this topic came up, but they got deleted promptly. It works fine for combat, hence the reason that it is used by people that have a choice.

It has been brought to my attention that I have poor reading comprehension skills. My apologies to Garandman.

I think BM11 stated it best here:
I find it incredible how much the 5.56's dominate this challenge.

.224 bullets are stupid cheap & 5.56 ammo is actually rather accurate up to 300yards / pushing up to 600yards & if all you're doing to punching holes in paper up to 600yards = why the hell not??? especially if money and components availability is important to you such as myself... To give you an idea with the last 3 shootout threads & the 300yard thread, the 5.56 round usually comes out on top or damn close to it & you will see that 7.62 rounds usually creeps more towards the bottom of the list... yes, yes, I know shooter skills has some involvement in these stats, but it does give a good idea on the importance of the 5.56 round:

there is no "giving up" on the 5.56 round for this kid..... I actually prefer it as it's soooo darn cheap to reload & is crazy accurate up to 600yards no problem.... kick in a heavy 68grn plus bullet with an extra powder drop load and you can easy take down deer in my next of the woods in Wisconsin as shots rarely ever go over 100yards.

I have actually just recently been drawn into the .223/5.56 crowd. I was a firm believer prior to a year ago that a .224 caliber bullet needed to travel FAST (my .22-250 shoots a 52 SMK at 3700fps at .338" 100 yd. 5 shot groups) and out of a bolt gun to be worth shooting a light bullet.

I have, since the last year, picked up two ARs. A 16.5" basic M4, and more recently (since my 11 year old daughter has taken over the first AR) a Bushmaster Varminter 24" AR.
We have also just started shooting them at longer distances, out to 700 yds. so far, but plans hold a 1000 yd. contest in our families future. My brother was also a .223/5.56 novice, and he now has two ARs also. One within the past month after I was schooling him with my original off the shelf M4 while varmint/rabbit hunting. Two weeks ago we got him zeroed and went to shoot some steel at 500+/- yds. After zeroing and gaining ballistic information, he made a first round hit on 12"x16" steel at 497 yds. with a 3-9 scope with only a standard crosshair and no dialing by just holdover. He made 7 out of 10 hits with this method. I went 10 for 10 at 502 yds. as well as 8 for 10 at 613 yds. with significant wind. I then took my M4 and went 5 for 5 at 497 yds. with factory ammo. All shooting 50 gr pills. I now shoot 69gr. SMKs in my Varminter exclusively.

The .223 has put a hurting on coyotes out to 400 yds. for me so far. I am hoping to extend that range this winter. My daughter has shot rabbits at 258 yds. with the M4.

If nothing else, the .223 is a very inexpensive training round for larger calibers, and allows my 11 year old daughter to comfortably shoot all day long with me. I am a new .223 fan.

Question.... In the big scheme of things why single out the .223 from the hundreds of other calibers out there that the same question could be posed.....

Hard to give up on a 556 / 223 while the military is still using it as much as they are. I am eying. A 6.5 Grendel upper though but will keep the 556/223 upper for others reasons.

I use my rifles in the field almost daily. Very seldom does a week pass that I do not fire them. Predator control, deer culling, varmints etc. I carry the rifle, walk miles. The AR 5.56 is the best I have ever used. I seldom pick up another rifle. MK 12 Mod 1 is the current favorite. Weight of rifle and ammo are important to me. If I sat at a bench, might be different. I can say that I have sold every AR 10 platform I have ever owned. That is several. Too much weight. Mostly shoot 77 grain SMK. Normally about 3K per year. Just sighting, verifying come ups and wind drift. And hunting. I really like being familiar with one rifle and load. Just makes a difference in the field. Cost of rifle or ammo has little to do with it. Weight has a huge amount to do with it.
