Recently worked up a very accurate load using Alliant Power Pro 2000MR in my 308. This powder has given an additional 120 fps over varget with 185 Bergers. Can anyone comment on this powders temperature sensitivity ? The combination of accuracy and velocity seem too good be true. Unfortunately not going to see warmer temps in Spokane until next summer to test sensitivity myself. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jimmy

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

I'm not 100% sure what the sensitivity is like. I will just mention my experience with it. I worked my load up for the 178 A-Max with it this summmer in 85-90 degree weather and was shooting it this Novemeber in the 30's and had no difference in poi. I know it's not much to go on but it's what I have.

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

I'm interested in this as well. I would like to try 2000MR in 308 and 25-06

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

I'm seeing about .75 ftps per 1 degree temp change over the chrono in the testing i've done so far. Shooting my 308 with 185gr Berger Hybrids with BR2 primers. Not quite as good as Varget temp wise but stable enough for my uses in the temps I shoot in. Velocity and accuracy are VERY good. To get the speed i get with 2000MR with Varget I would be blowing primers and wrecking my brass.

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

Sorry to hijack but what is the change per degree with varget?

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

I worked up a load that was on the hot side. During a very hot day in Texas, I was piercing primers. I have never pierced primers before. It was piercing primers every time.

I didn't chrony the velocity increase, but clearly, pressure was a bunch higher. The load was worked up at 85 degrees. It was probably 115 degrees that day.

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

Down South,

What barrel length and velocity are you getting with the 185 hybrids ?

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

I use 2000MR and get 3050fps with 168 Hybrids out of a 30" barrel

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

Carter Mayfield,

Yikes ! I can't remember a day in my neck of the woods near 115 degrees. I'm sure that would be a good test of any powders sensitivity. We generally rust from all the wet weather in the PNW.

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

I've read several reports, some on here, of pressure dramatically appearing in upper end loads somewhere in the vicinity of 105*, pierced and blown primers and the like. I had no issues with it, but did not shoot in those temps or chrono.

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

No, never had the chance. When it gets cool my 1 in 13" barrel wont stabilize the 168 Hybrid. Shot it at 500 a few weeks ago and the groups were so-so. I'd like to put a different barrel on and give em a go.

Did you try other powders in that same senario and if so did any others pierce primers? Just curious as you mentioned it was a hot load to begin with.

28 inch Krieger (11 twist) and right at 2800 ftps.

I have ran test after test. Little less than 1 fps per degree. I'm running 175 smk, lapua brass, fgm 210 m at 2.236" to ogive. Out of a 22" bartlein ( gap crusader) @ 2770. With 44.6 varget I was only getting 2690. Power pro's burn rate is great for 175 and up. Sucks with palmas

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

Appreciate all the info from everyone. Sounds like it's realtively sensitive compared to varget. Anywhere between 1 to 3 FPS/degree ? I guess I'll find out as temps start warming up this spring and into the summer months. I'm very satisfied with this powder in terms of accuracy, velocity and metering.

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

I've seen .7/.8 fps per degree F with 2000MR. What's Varget supposed to be? I hear a lot of people stating that it's more stable but, never see numbers. One nice feature with 2000MR is that the nodes are very wide. My node at 47.5 gr & 175 SMK can be +/-.5 grains with little to no change of point of impact.

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

I've read varget is .2-.5 fps/degree depending on the source? The truth lies somewhere in the middle, who knows ? If you ask 10 people you get 10 different answers regarding powder sensitivity. I will post my findings with power pro 2000 as temps start to warm up. I can live with .7-.8fps/degree. Thanks for posting your results.

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

I just bought 8lbs of this stuff to work up 175 SMK loads in my Rem 5R. 100-150 extra velocity? I'm in!! I'm going to try my hand at ladder testing @ 600. I'll post my results.

Anywhere from 46 to 48 and you will have it nailed

Does this nearly fill the case? I understand it meters well?

Re: Power Pro 2000MR for 308 win

For ftr matches I'm running 48.0 at 2.236" to ogive out of lapua brass. It's compressed but brass and primers look fine and pockets are still tight. 48.0 gives me 2770 fps out of a 22" bartlein Gap Crusader. I don't have much freebore where as I'm in the lands at 2.840" with a vld. But it shoots better groups than varget and also 90 fps more

Hate to beat a dead horse here but I've got some AWSOME #'s from a new rig I had built. Stiller Tac 30 with a Bartlein #9 @ 28" , 1:11.25, Jewell trigger, AICS.

Loaded some 185 OTMs with 47.0 2000 mr, lapua brass, 210m, and loaded at 2.236 to ogive.
Using a magnetospeed V2
1) 2823
2) 2839
3)2853
4)2823
5)2823

Es -30 Sd 13

I know that consistency isn't great but it shot a .317" group at 105 yards.
Anyhow, just thought of share the data and a pic of my rig

AS,

Good to see its working for you in your rifle! I've got one rifle loaded up with B200 Hybrids going ~2650-ish that seems to shoot pretty well from one of my F/TR rigs. Haven't had a chance to shoot it much myself, ironically - its my backup/'loaner' rifle. I've got another .308 around here (dang things breed like rabbits, I swear! ;P ) - a 20" Sav 10PC-SR that I finally used up the last of the powder for the load I had for it (S2156MKs over I4895 @ ~2830fps) and I'm planning on trying some 2000MR behind some heavier bullets in it.

Question for those of you who've used more of this stuff than I have (most of you)... are you weighing or throwing it?

Monte

Monte,

I was running the 200 hybrids with 2000MR at 2650-2660 also with my older FTR rig and i had a 28 inch barrel . That load shot well at 1000 and i won a couple 600 yard matches with it also. I weigh everything but don't see why you couldn't throw it.

What's that rifle doing these days??

Sitting in the gun safe begging to get out......lol......I might shoot the next match with it and give the newer one a break. It still hammers and shoots as good as the new rig but i've been having really good matches with the new rig and kinda hate to mess up the mojo thats been going on lately.......lol

I've been shooting 48.5 gr of the PP2000 with Nosler 155's to very good effect, SD under 10. It's a pretty full case using military brass but gives me 2990 fps. This was thru the summer and into the fall. I shot some last weekend with 40-deg temps and they are giving me vertical stringing now. I think I need to bump the powder up just a little bit for the cooler temps but not sure if i have enough case capacity. I didn't have my chrono with me when I shot these, wondering now what the numbers look like. It looks like it's going to be cool here for the next couple of weeks so I hope to get a chance to run them.
