'couve, wa
picked up a heavy barrel .17hmr. going to put it in a boyds tacticool and use it for varmint/bench shooting. what do you all think for an optic choice?

If fixed power would work for you, you won't do better than a SWFA SS 12x, 16x, or 20x.

I'm not sure what distances you plan to shoot, but it is nice to err on the side of higher magnification with a bench setup, or very small targets, like varmints at over 100y.
The SS will have more internal adjustment and more reliable tracking for dialing out to max distance with the .17hmr than most $300 scopes.

In a variable under $300, you probably won't want to exceed a 4-12x (like a Vortex Diamondback), as good image quality at higher magnifications gets more costly. If you really need a variable, probably save another $120 or so for a something like Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50, IMO.

Contrary to everything I just said, I've heard good things so far about these for $190: http://swfa.com/Bushnell-45-18x40-AR-Optics-Rifle-Scope-P61356.aspx , But can't personally vouch for them.

I a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x with the Balistic Plex reticle on my .17HMR that I think is a really nice scope for the money. You should be able find one on sale right now for < $200.00.

I have a Leupold VX3 3-10x40 mounted on a Ruger 77/17 with a Shilen 26" heavy barrel. Works great.

man you can all laugh all you want. I own Zeiss, vortex viper pst, Leupold mark 4 and a bunch of other mid level scopes of that range. On my 17 hmr I shoot a lot of ground hogs a year (250 or so ) at a lot of different ranges. I have the bsa tactical 17hmr scope. It works just as advertised. I range find a ground hog, dial in on turret and pull the trigger. I could not be more pleased. I bought mine on ebay for 80 used. Spend your other money on lots and lots of ammo. Around here I can get it for 11.50 a box. It works as advertised.

is that the sweet 17?

BSA 4-14 ffp mil mil midway special, probably the same scope as the primary arms/falcon menace but it has a hash reticle. I've got four of them on .22's and .17's.

I just bought a new sweet 17 6x18 for $55 at Natchez, they have some awesome BSA prices.I'm not a BSA fan but it looks great & the top turret goes to 300 yds. They also had 36x fixed power target scopes for the same price. I picked up a few as well.
