New PR shooter here...

I've been doing well shooting Federal Gold Match ammo with Sierra King 175gr bullets.

I have quite a lot of PPU 145 grain ammo that I used with my SCAR 17.

My rifle is handling the Federal Sierra King stuff wonderfully, sub-MOA at 100 yards, etc.

What can I expect the 145 grain bullets to do when I use/shoot them? Hit the target higher?

If only there was an easy way to perform a simple test to find out the true answer...

OK, yawn, two DB responses....

Anyone have anything helpful to offer?

More drift @ long range, but you should run a few through your rifle and make your own conclusions.

Running the PPU 145's I noticed an inconsistent spread at 100 yrds. I was scratching my head thinking how could this possibly be me?
I have not shot it past that distance yet so that's all I can contribute now. I'll be out shooting to 1000 yards in a few weeks and I'll bring some 145's with me to verify the POI compared to a SMK 175.

That 145 grain ammo is basically the equivalent to surplus machine gun ammo. It might shoot well for you, it may not. Only way to tell is to shoot it and see.

And yes, you can expect it to impact higher at 100 yards.

Your storied history on the internet would suggest that you have been around firearms long enough to know that, while we can all recite some standard assumptions about what a load should or should not do, reality does not always follow theory.

So, while a lighter and faster load should print slightly higher at 100 yards, it may very well print left, or right, or lower. So stop wasting time with questions that can't accurately be answered over the internet, and go do some actual shooting. Maybe you can made a video while you're at it.

Went out today and shot some PPU 145 to help you out in the offset.

Then I shot some Hornaday Match 168 BTHP (sorry didn't have the Federal Gold Match 175 yet) You can see the drop with the heavier bullet so the 175 theoretically should drop at least this much or more unless the charge is greater.

I was shooting into the sun so my centering of the scope was critical to not see the glare.

Don't know about you weapon but in mine if I run a 147fmjbt at 2815fps muzzle, it will almost track perfect with a 175smk to a grand, with a base add of 1.5 up and 3/4 left wind-age change.
As with any weapon, barrel exit time dictates where it goes over any other load you may have data for. A different recoil pulse (projo & charge weight change)then add a change in bullet speed and a few other factors, I've seen as much as 3+moa change over the years. This is the reason most guys that may be called upon to launch a special, spend the range time to know where they go over their base load. Takes me 55moa plus 2.5 mil to get to 400yds, with my subs over my base load, you?

Here's the only thing any here knows for sure: the bullet will ALWAYS go in the direction the barrel is pointed. Beginning with that fact, what happens at the target is a result of knowledge, skill, and attitude fostered from an interest or curiosity about the matter. You appear to be too lazy or caviler to learn by doing and thus your inquiry; but, you should know that being given the answers is not nearly as satisfying as making the discovery through your own exercise.

Hey, Sterling, I think you accidentally posted here on this forum at 2:00 in the morning after stumbling in from your Jerks Anonymous meeting. How about you check the description of this area of the forum and stow the attitude. Mmmmk?

I think you may want to check with your physician and get your Prozac dosage increased. It does not seem to be working too well for you.

Expect two things, the FGMM will exhibit a smaller native (as opposed to operator-induced) dispersion, and the group center may differ from the PPU.

POI shift due to load mismatch is not reliably predictable, as it is a product of ballistics, muzzle flip, means of support, and marksmanship style, etc.

Best to try instead of ask; nobody here can give you a reliable answer. I'd be unsure of any more definite a prediction.

Thank you for the link to those fancy gun videos you make. They are INDEED informative and provide a tremendous amount of insight into the mind of a truly lonely and pitiful sole. Enjoy your Swanson!...salisbury steak tonight?
