okay, I'm looking to build something kind of cheap and fun to shoot. I was thinking of using a Mosin or Mauser action and Barrel.I want to Sporteriz whichever one I decide to use I'm not sure if I will use a scope or not yet. I will re barrel if I have to , I can get a barrel chambered kind of cheap. I'm not looking for a Tack driver, just something different and fun to play with . If i have to rebarrel I will probably go with a Different caliber like a 7.5X55 or 6.5x55 . what is the best and most common to mosin or Mauser action to use ?

Was thinking something like this... with a bent bolt handle.

Oh and i can get a mosin 91/30. For about 140, just not how the bore is or what to look for without a bore scope . I am ordering a GO and NO GO gauge

A couple of years ago there was a guy on here with a home made stock with a Mosin action that was rebarreled to 260 Rem and he put his own home rolled scope mount on it. The result was pretty cool looking and it shot very well.

The biggest issue with the Mosin action is figuring out a way to scope it, there's not a lot of options for working in a clean solution. They're very accurate when trued up adn rebarreled though. The 762x54R is also pretty close to a 30-06 and if you just cut the chamber into a standard 300/308 barrel instead of the 303/311 barrels you can use all of the popular bullets in 30c with it. There is also Lapua brass in 53R that is different only in trim length, it's also not too expensive.

If you're going to run a 6.5x55 then work it into a Mauser, be sure to steel block the recoil lug and pillar bed the rear screw at a minimum. Mausers are much easier to scope than the Mosin's.

when doing a mosin, how do you get a smaller bolt face for the smaller, rimless cartridges?

Another option is to see if you can score a 1903 or an 03A3 sporter. I have seen them below $200 occasionally, but its not terribly often. One rifle I would love to do would be a K31 swiss rifle. That could be really cool to take one and do it up with a custom stock, heavy barrel and such. Not sure how feasible it would be, but it would be fun and different IMO. If all else fails, just go with the Mauser. I have never been a fan of the mosin and at least with the Mauser and the 03 springer, you have some aftermarket support for triggers and scope mounts etc.

I have a stupid build on a 1903 planned. Will probably be threading the bolt knob and making a 20moa rail for it today or tomorrow. Its already been sporterized, so why not take it the whole 9 yards?

Rock Solid Industries makes a pretty decent Mosin-Nagant scope mounting system; they even have a package available with a re-welded bolt body with an extended handle. I've used their mounts previously for customers and except for a lack-luster anodizing job (nothing wrong with it, but I was expecting something like Type III), it was very well made.

They also make a scope mounting system for the Swiss K31 rifles that Sortafast is talking about above.

Well i just got a small ring Spanish mauser action. For 100$... its in good shape and complete. Now i want a synthetic stock without a cheek piece, i hate them. Like mcmillan. But cant spend 600 on it right now. Choate makes one not sure if it has a cheek piece tho...

you could also see if stockade stocks can inlet a stock for you mauser. I have a choate tactical stock on a rifle and its not bad. A bit of a pig weight and width wise, but it works pretty well IMO. Don't know if they make them for the Mauser actions and am too lazy to look

I difnt see one for a mauser, ill call them in the morning, finding a stock might be a problem. Dont think B & C makes for a small ring.

Your action choice will be very limiting when it comes to stocks. Not a lot of small ring stocks. I prefer the large ring m98 myself.

Back in the early 80's I did a few 45/70's on Bubba'd Mosins. The 7.62 x 54R cost more then the rifles. Then the 90's you could get a 91/30 and 1,000 rounds for $100. Times change. Find a Bubba'd Mauser and do a 6.5 Swiss :)
