Anyone out there comfortable doing a fit and chamber on a Remington Model 7 in any of the above mentioned calibers? I don't need more energy than the .223 sized case for pigs or deer if I can go up to a 6mm or 6.5mm bullet. 6.5TCU with 95gr max bullet would be preferred.
Thanks.

Looks like I'll have to build this one myself. I'm going to order some .222 mag brass tomorrow and if it's actually available I'll get a reamer made for a shorter throat version of the 6.5 TCU that's a bit longer in the body. I already have a set of 6.5mm TCU dies and at worst I may need to make a stubby die to size the base occasionally. It will be interesting to see how much the extra length adds to the performance.

A 6XC model 7 was FS on 6mmbr.com not long ago.....

You can download, recoil light. Personally, sounds like you need a 6.5BR. Had a 7BR shot 120s at 2878 in a 21"

I have built several 6mm TCU rifles in fast twist barrels for hunting and my current "truck" gun is a 6TCU with a 22" shilen barrel. I have no trouble pushing the 95mk 2950fps with imr 8208 but it doesn't kill well at all. the sierra 85gr hpbt is an excellent killer at 3050fps! I am currently shooting the 80gr sierra blitz at 3050fps and have taken deer, pigs, and coyotes with this load. this deer was killed a few weeks ago with the 80gr sierra at 250yds. believe it or not, it was a complete pass through. you can push the 80gr up to 3200fps if desired. the 105 amax at 2700fps is plenty doable. that load would do a LOT of killing in a very small package.

When you say fast twist, are you talking fast like a 1-10(which seems about right for the 80 and 85 gr bullets ) or the crazy fast 1-8 stuff? Your rifle sounds like what I want, short, light, and just enough power to get the job done.

My TC was in a TCU at 21" in 12 twist, did ok w/85 SGK, but not ideal. Only use an 8 twist since then in 6BRs, and would use that in any 6. Shot 66s into 1/4" at 200 yds for 3 shots over and over, in a BR, no worry about over spin, but you can under spin. An 8 would be best, a 9 ok, but may not handle 105s in this round.

Current barrel is a 10 twist because it was available. I find it suitable for any hunting bullets you would use in the little case. Last barrel, and several others were 8 twist. They shoot just as well and are probably more versitile. Also, it feeds well through an unaltered 700 magazine somthing that cant be said for the 6br. Get a 10 twist and shoot the 85gr sierra gameking. Its great on everything from coyotes to big pigs over 300lbs!

I was looking earlier and Brownells has the light #3 and #4 contour barrels in a 1-10 twist. I wouldn't go over 85 gr or so with a 6mm anyway so a faster twist would not be beneficial. I ran a 6.5 TCU a number of years ago with a 1-10 twist and it did really well with the 95 and 100 gr bullets. I agree on the poor feeding with the BR case as well.

Had an M7 using a 700 stamped follower, fed full mag slick as greased glass in 7BR....

Your one of the very few i think. Could be the 1/2" difference in the 700 and model 7 make a big difference in feeding though.

Honestly I felt the heavier bullets kept the rounds laying flat in mag, and the COL had less a jump to get to the feed ramp, but had a 6BR that fed pretty well on a Stiller w/700 parts also. That 6BR fed the heavier bullets better. I think 105s tend to feed better than say 70s, as they did not get tilted up quite so much by spring pressure.

I enjoyed my TCU for mild firing behavior, but for me, it lacked the power and reach of the BR, as the BR nips on a 243. I would personally feel good about a 6TCU or 6x45 to about 250 yds on deer/hogs, that being based on my experience. Sure they can be stretched. Just all depends on ones needs. Alot of folks do pretty well w/fast twisted 223/AI shooting heavies, if their game laws allow it.

Enjoy your build.
