I've got a lower ready to go, but I can't find any uppers that really suit what I like, so I'd like to be able to piece one together. My question is, being that I usually just buy complete uppers/lowers,--what parts will I need?
As of now I know:
upper with BCG, charging handle
Barrel
Gas tube
Gas block
Free floatrail
barrel nut

what am i missing?

before i get all the "google is your friend" crap, I've looked it up but can't seem to find any straight answers

It all depends on what specific platform you are working with (i.e. - Armalite pattern, DPMS/KAC pattern, etc.) as to which parts you'll need. Also, knowing that information as well as what specifically you are looking for in terms of the components for your build or a fully configured upper may get you pointed in the right direction.

Hogan lower with dpms upper with custom barrel brake and rail

If the upper is a forward-assist model, you'll need a FA assembly if not already installed when purchased. You'll also need a dust/ejection port cover, pin and spring (again...if applicable and if not already installed).

You'll also need any specific/proprietary tools/wrenches/etc. necessary to install your particular barrel nut/FF handguard/etc. if your smith doesn't have them.

Gas tube roll pin (if not included with the tube or block).

Crush washer, peel washer, etc. for installing/timing your brake unless you are having it properly timed/installed by your smith then he can supply/part as needed.

That about does it I think...not much to it really.

Alright that should do it it seems. Thanks guys for the help/input.

I was thinking about building a AR10 to replace the dpms I sold it seems much cheaper to buy an upper or complete rifle apposed to building one unless your looking for something special or high end

Yeah I mean dpms has complete 16" uppers for 600 so might as well buy that then just swap the barrel and rail

Upper:
Barrel
BCG
Barrel Nut
Charging Handle
Rail
Gas Block
Gas Tube
Muzzle Device (If threaded)
Sights

Not reccomended but I used no vice, or any special tools, The barrel nut/rail I will probably use a tool but so far just my bare hands rubber mallet and a towel.
