After trying all the mods I read about on forums... I still was not happy. A reprogrammed chargemaster running this mod, will be the fastest I've found, with the least amount of overthrows. You can "tune" individual straws for different powders, and change them out easily.

Insert mcdonalds straw all the way to the rear. Mark where the front of the opening is.

Use cutoff wheel or some other method, and make a slot in the straw half way through. The size of the opening can be modified to your preference and to work with different powders.

    It will look like this.

Cut off the straw past the end of the dispensing tube. You can wrap the straw with tape at the end to "wedge" it in there if necessary.

This is much easier to accomplish repeatably than other mods, and can be easily tuned to fit different powders. You can go so far as to tune a straw for each powder, as it is very easy to change out.

Thats really cool orkan! Quick and simple! Just a few questions for ya:

1.) how many seconds does it take to drop for example your typical 43varget load?

2.) does it trickle 1 or 2 pcs of varget before the the powder drop stops or do you find it still clumping at the end of the tube being that the restriction is more at the start of the tube rather than being at the end of the tube?

3.) do you still get over / under throws with this mod?

4.) have you tried it with varget yet?

    Nice write up!

Nice post, great idea. Same with yours too elfster.
I'm telling you, if someone would develop a dual straw (one for coarse, hi speed and then one for slow single trickling) and combine it with a quality magnetic force balance, they would make a fortune.
I might just do it with the help of some EE's from work.

I haven't pulled out the stop watch, but it throws VERY fast. Tuning the straws really allows you to tune the speed in the settings to really blaze along.

I load a ton of varget, so I have a straw which works well with it.

No I don't worry about powder getting between the tube and straw. The micky d's straw is a nice fit.

Getting over/under-throws is very very rare. I'm talking like 1 per 300. ... as I said, it truly is the best straw mod, since it lets you tune the opening to allow as much or as little powder through as you like. A slower trickle is still faster than over-throw and recharging. Yet I noticed no appreciable loss in dispensing speed. I run two chargemasters in tandem, both with this mod, and by the time I dump the powder and seat a bullet, the next charge is ready.

Do you worry about powder getting between the straw and the orignal shaft?

I've had this (above) and many other custom straws on hand for different powders for years now. Getting powders between the tube and the straw happens all the time with small ball powders like TAC/Xterm but it's easy to clean out by simply pulling out the straw.

I guess you need to put a stop watch on it cause if you can't get it faster that 13 seconds avg for 40-45 grains Varget then I have no reason to try it as I can get that with little to no overthrows with a little programming and the old straw trick.

I had "little to no overthrows" with the old mod as well. This way, I have basically none. Usually if I overthrow, it's because I bumped something and upset the scale when it was running the final trickle. That said, I'm not charging anything for it, so you aren't forced to try it. :)

No I hear ya man. I would be curious to know how fast you can throw a charge of say 45 grains of Varget or something like that. If it was close to 13 seconds and it pretty much eliminated overthrows (which I would say I get maybe 1in 50 or so, I would try your way.

Orkan I did your straw mod and reprogrammed my settings again. works great now.

I was experiencing more under throws than over and so far playing with it I had a 1/10 grn under throw so far out of about 50 throws.

    Thanks

Glad it worked for you trapshooter. :)

Rem7... pictured above is my varget/retumbo/H4350 straw. I only run two straws. This one pictured, and another with a little tiny hole in it for running ball powders.
