I was at Academy the other day looking for 9mm ammo, and I came across these 30rd aluminum mags branded with the Red Jacket logo for $10. I haven't seen a $10 AR mag around here since before Sandy Hook. I bought one, haven't got a chance to shoot it yet (and it'll be awhile as I cashed in on all of the tomfoolery when a $600 DPMS was going $2000 around here so I'm in the process of building a new AR) and am wondering if anybody has any experience with them. They look like milsurp GI mags to me.

Good Lord! CAN'T find cheap AR mags??

Academy isn't the place to look. DSG Arms has had $10 P-Mags for some time now.

Look for a bargain online.

Plenty of exceptional quality AR mags floating around now for reasonable prices, including the $9.99 PMAGs mentioned above, along with 10-pack specials from Brownells for PMAGs and their own Alum. 20- and 30-round mags, and various others for good deals to be had from numerous known/quality vendors, including some Hide vendors.

No need to pay $10 for a "questionable" mag from a source like RJ. If they are from RJ direct, then it should be easy to tell from the multiple hammer marks on the mags from them being "shaped" into mags from old recycled soda cans, etc. ;) ;)

My guess...they are from any number of "cheap" mag mfgs simply branded with the RJ logo and sold under license by RJ. You may luck out and they may run ok or you may end up with a $10 paperweight. Only time will tell, but in the meantime...I wouldn't put a lot of stock in them!! Out of curiosity, what kind of guts do they seem to have in terms of what gen follower, spring type, etc.?

Guts appear to be standard USGI type, green anti tilt follower, nonwoven spring, flat sheetmetal floorplate. Range report will be a ways off, got to finish building the rifle first. Damn you McGowen Barrels and your backlog! Waiting on a .625" diameter 14.75" pencil barrel with a mid length gas system, but I've only been waiting for 3 weeks so I gues it hasn't been that long lol.

Borrowed a rifle last night as nobody could tell me anything. Shot my buddy's DPMS sportical and a custom piston driven varmint gun last night and again this morning. Put them up against Pmag Gen 3 window/Gen 2 non window, a couple GI 30rd. a Tapco intrafuse, SIG branded poly mag,, and a GI with the Magpul follower and a ranger plate. Shot as good as the USGI in my limited testing (8 magazines, 30rds per mag in both guns) ran as good as USGI, Tapco ran about as good, Pmags, well, what more do I need to say, they're Pmags. surprise was the USGI with Magpul follower, ran as good as a Pmag. Was experiencing a little follower tilt (as evidenced by bullet noses jammed into the upper, DPMS shot with XM193, custom shot with MK 262 clones, except out of the Pmags because we couldn't get them to load, his OAL was a touch too long so we shot XM855) as evidenced by bullet noses jammed into the upper below the barrel extension, seemed they weren't pointing the nose up high enough, but we had that issue with USGI as well. Think I may pick up a few more and swap followers in about half of them for Magpul and do some more in depth testing. Still cheaper than a Pmag going that route around here as a new Gen 3 Pmag will cost you about double what I paid for the rad jacket mag. Going this route I'll be right around $15 per mag
