Caliber choice for a M700 Ti action (long)?

I've come across a Remington barreled action from one of the old Titanium Ultralights. It's still wearing the 22" factory barrel in 30-06 and looks to be in like new condition. What are some recommendations for the caliber in a re-barreling case? I've already built one of these in 280AI.

For what purpose?

.532" or .473" bolt?

Personally, I don't see how you can go wrong with a 280/280AI, but you've already got one!

I wouldn't waste my time with worrying about it. Just sell it to me. You don't want that piece of junk anyway.

Application would be a mountain rifle. Bolt is .473", I was thinking 6.5-284 or 6.5 SAUM.

You are going to run into issues with the 6.5 SAUM. The bolt face would have to be opened up and it is a short action cartridge which may lead to feeding problems. I would go with 6.5x284 or 6.5-06AI. You may also want to look at 284win if you want the ability to shoot slightly bigger bullets. Of course there is a lot of overlap with this and your 280AI.

If you are looking for something a bit smaller you might look at 6mm remington or 25-06.

SharpsNitro,

Consider giving the .257 Roberts or the AI version a try.

I'm playing with a 250/3000 AI, but you don't need a long action for that one...

You've really covered the bases with your 280 AI. Unless you want to go bigger and try a .35 Whelan AI(not recommended in a featherweight rifle, tho'...

If your 280AI is a heavy(ish) gun, why not just make a lightweight mountain rifle also in 280AI?

6.5-284 is great and all, but it's not going to do anything 280AI won't - cept maybe create a little less recoil.

6.5X55 Swede would be sweet in one of those actions.

My 280AI weights in at 6.3lbs unloaded with a Swarovski Z6 1.7-10X scope, it used to be a couple ounces under 6lbs when I had a Leupold 3-9X Ultralite on it. The 6.5-284 may be the best bet but really won't do anything the 280AI won't as already noted.

For a larger caliber a 9.3x62mm would be interesting.

Bullseye is kidding. Sell to me. I have been looking hard for one of these in '06.
Honestly, I would leave it an '06. Maybe a second barrel in .338-'06 and a pinned lug (maybe these were integral recoil lugs?). Those 225 class bullets would rock out of a light rig like that.
Enjoy that nice mtn rifle.

Me personally I would stick with the old 30-06. Wide range of bullet weights, plentiful ammo, and if you reload you can pretty much duplicate .300 win mag ballistics.

6.5x284 for me. Retumbo and berger 140's and your good to go. My dad uses it for everything from antelope to elk. Took a bull at 805 yds this year no problem.

FYI a 6.5x55 AI or Vais will give you the same ballistics as the 6.5x284 (same case capacity) with cheaper brass (Lapua) and 2x+ the barrel life.

This, as you said you already have one of those wondering calibers already. Why duplicate it?

I really like the idea of a superlight 280AI. Since you already have that, why not something super flat shooting based off of an '06... 6.5-06 sounds fun.

Lots of interesting ideas. Too bad it isn't a short action, a .243 30deg would be a no brainer.

It doesn't have to be a short action if you want to put a .243 in there. Might be better so you can run the heavies as far out as you want.
