Anyone have any connections with Hornady that could shed some light on their plans for this bullet? I called them again the other day to see if it was still on the suspended list and was told that there were no scheduled plans to make any in the next 6 months....or the foreseeable future for that matter. I've got just a few hundred left so I really wish I knew how long this suspension was going to last or if I should just start developing another bullet. I suppose the 168 Berger would be the next option but they aren't real plentiful either.

No one seems to ever mention the Hornady 162 grain Match, very similar to the Amax I believe. I just bought 3 boxes to try out.......

The 162hpbt is also on the suspend list.

OP: My advice is to develop a new load with a different bullet. Sell the amax's you've got on hand, they'll move easy.

I also run 154gr SSTs, not too shabby for the money. Not sure if they're still cranking those out though. I'm sittin happy.

Hornady has cut their own balls off by doing this.....I still don't get their business plan, or what they hope to accomplish. The A-max is sriously the only bullet I want to shoot through my 7mm; it fits my criteria in every way. Grrrrrrrrrrrr...... I'll keep stocking up on the Hornady match while I can find them, though........then another bullet company is getting my money.

Kind of wish Hornady would communicate their direction on this better than they have unless they did and I missed it. The person on the phone was not very positive but did say there was not any production schedule for that bullet. I know suppliers where I buy most of my stuff and they are puzzled by the way it is being handled as well. Certainly not what I was hoping to hear but looks like its time to move on.

Yes, the 154 SST run well as do the Sierra's.

While the 7mm 168smk doesn't win any form factor or BC awards, they're available and shoot very well.

Not a top performing bullet, but not awful.

Hornady Makes Plans to Increase Production Volume

For over half a year, Hornady Manufacturing, along with the rest of the shooting sports industry, has experienced an unbelievable spike in demand. This dramatic increase in demand is unprecedented. As stated earlier this year in our Product Availability FAQ we have been continuously growing for a number of years; adding people, equipment and manufacturing space as rapidly as we can. We are producing and shipping product at record levels and are continually looking to grow and improve our ability to fulfill orders. But the current state of the industry is such that our increase in shipments this year is overshadowed by a 200% increase in demand.

One area that we have identified that will enable us to increase production, is the minimization of machinery downtime. The largest period of downtime our machines experience is during change over and retooling to convert a machine from manufacturing one bullet or cartridge to another. Under normal market conditions, we can keep the supply chain full by making popular items on a regular basis and keeping specialty or less-used products on a seasonal basis. However, with demand at record levels, it has become difficult to justify shutting down a machine to change it over to produce a product of less demand. Therefore, we are temporarily suspending some items in order to focus our efforts on the most popular and highest demand products* and ship more total product.

We realize that many of the suspended items are going to disappoint some of our customers. We have painstakingly reviewed our order status and order history and unfortunately had to make some tough decisions. It wasn't easy, but we know that we will do a better job of servicing the industry as a whole by focusing on the items of highest demand*.

We are not alone; this is effectively already happening throughout our industry, but is accomplished through selective manufacture with no notification to the industry. We are simply making every effort to be up-front about our plans to maximize production.

Again, this is only temporary. This is not a permanent suspension. We will continue to push as hard as we can to meet the demand of our industry and will produce our full catalog of items as soon as we can. Please know that nobody wants to produce more and get our product to into your hands more than we do.

And lastly, we feel compelled to address some of the conspiracy theories that we have seen posted. NO, this is not a conspiracy effort to shape the industry, nor is it controlled by the government. We are simply being forthright about our manufacturing plans and our efforts to supply MORE product to the very hungry shooting sports industry.

We truly appreciate your patience during this period of time. Thank you for your understanding.

Hornady knows what they sell and what they are doing. Just because it's your favorite bullet doesn't mean it sells enough to fit with what they plan on doing for the near future to keep production up. The bullets will be back.

OP, Hornady has put out press releases and videos on what they are doing. They have informed the shooting public quite well but people take it personal because something they think sells great and they use is on the suspend list. Things I use are on the list also. It's not personal. It's business. Hornady spells it out clearly.

I see the 105 amax is on the list but highlighted in yellow. What does that mean? I cant find this list on the web site

Midway is showing the 105 A-Max as "Backorder OK" with an arrival date in mid-January; same for the .224 75gr A-Max and .308 178gr HPBT.

No such luck (unfortunately) with the 7mm 162s or the .224 80gr A-Max.

Nothing personal, I'm sure it is just business and I was just trying to find out how long "temporary" was as it related to the 162 Amax. Per the list, it looks like they will not make any if 2014 so it's time to go elsewhere.

I've looked pretty carefully for these bullets for sale, if I have missed something feel free to PM me.

Time for a thread necromancy.
Midway sent out a notice that they had Amax 162s. about 10 minutes later I couldn't even get an order placed because every time I hit "review order" the total available went down (started at 5 boxes). What a screwed up website. Really wish they would simply allow backorders for it, rather than these whack-a-mole order games.

I wish hornady would quit making their hollow points so they could make more of these 162s
