does anyone know what the felt like material used on the inside of suppressor cover is?

ok. Is it some top secret material or something? and if that was a great reply you all are very easily entertained.

I've used a 'heat shield' pad from Home Depot in a pinch (used for soldering pipes in tight locations with a mapp gas torch), which doesn't catch fire with a direct flame. It's a nomex felt or something.

I'm trying to make something for the welding of chrome pipe that is preheated to protect the welder. I don't want to say anymore than that because I inadvertantly got into a top secret material conversation and dont want to reveal any of my NOW top secret project about a top secret material that I dont have. I need much bigger pieces than the heat shield size. Ive used those before and they burn up from the temps and welding sparks. Thank you for a serious reply though. Oh and dont tell anyone about this converstion "its top secret".

Tburkes owns Tab Gear. Maybe that explains why we are amused by the response. If you don't know about tab gear, then click the link below and you will understand. BTW-- tab gear covers are second to none...and not very expensive. It is probably not worth trying to figure out and make one on your own.

Beeman I have no idea who you are. I've had enough people whom I thought were friends who have ripped me off than to start giving information out on my products to just anyone who asks.

All of the people I know who are welders are pretty intelligent people. Ill give you a hint, Google is your friend. :) get ready with your check book though because the stuff is pretty pricey.

if you want to hear something amusing then hear this. I have 1 suppressor and it has 1 tab gear cover that came with it. thats where I seen the material and thought it might very well be used for something that is related to my career and not my hobby. I knew it would hold up on the heat aspect and it seemed to have insulating properties too. Theres probably not alot of people on here that have had to weld 9 chrome heavy wall pipe that is preheated to 450 degrees and held there while you weld on it all day. Didnt know about the owner being on here and frankly dont care. I appreciate the info though and now i know.

If you don't mind talking to a good friend of mine who owns a fab shop to prove you're who you say you are I'll sell you all of the stuff you want at my cost plus shipping.

I have absolutely no problem with that. That would be awesome.

not if im gonna be wearing it. dealing with those stinking things is bad enough at arms length.
Will regular top secret fiberglass blanket not work? Used by top secret welders worldwide to shield sparks and heat.

Nomex! I use to race Cars. race suits are Nomex, so are welding sleeves---$5 apiece.
I made one for my 338 can in a pinch till my cover came in----Still using it

OK, I see. Something I learned from some welders in TX, because they don't like to put too much outwear on, they wear wrangler or carhartt cotton shirts and starch them pretty good, claim the starch lets the splatter roll right off. Just throwing it out there.
We use to have some really good insulation at the power plant, I don't remember what it's called, but made really good blankets for wrapping around pipe for preheat and PWHT. The outer shell for the blankets was some sort of treated fiberglass cloth. I wish I knew what it was treated with because it's good stuff.

Everything is good Beeman. I'll contact you via PM to get the details ironed out.

It's all good Corey no hurt feelings from Beeman I'm sure.

I't's not Nomex.

No1, when you go into a dry cleaners , welders will tell them to Welders starch their shirts. When you get them back you've got to force your arm down the sleeves to get the starch cracked open.

I also worked 18 years in the chemical industry and know exactly what you're talking about on the pipe insulation. This ain't that.

yes the starch does work but usually used for stick welding on standard carbon pipe. the insulation your referring to is probably kao-wool. they wrap the heat pads with that but they still soak out with heat. Thank you.

The nomex stretchy arm protector seem to be workin pretty good so far. I sewed it up the nite before a match
I got some crap about it, but, it's not bad.
Thanks again for your donations to the rifle raffle.

Beeman, HAAAHAA

high right, outstanding, I'm glad it's working for you. I'm all about making your own stuff when you can. What's that saying... If its stupid but it works, it isn't too stupid after all. Perfect example in your case, way to go.

You're welcome on the donation, not sure which rifle you're talking about though.

Oh yeah, man, I can't think of much worse to happen to a person on a material loss situation. That and a house fire are tied I'd think. I sure hope the get their life back together ASAP.
