I ordered a new match barrel for my AR15, and it came in a crappy little cardboard tube with no padding, and just tape on both ends. Consequently the muzzle appeared to have hit concrete a couple of times, and there was some significant muzzle damage. I called the gunsmith and he took it back to recrown it and fix the threads that were damaged, but I'm wondering if that strike on the concrete could have bent the barrel at all, even .0005".

I ask because I spent $465 on the barrel, and I expected to get a brand new barrel, not a barrel that was damaged due to incorrect packaging, and then "fixed". If there is no chance of permanent damage, then ok, but if there is, shouldn't I be able to get a refund?

the way people pack things never ceases to amaze me. I recently shipped a barrel. it cost me a grand total of $7 in pvc parts
1 1/2" pvc pipe, cap on one end , and threaded plug on other. a lil foam packing on each end and its bullet proof for the trip. Its also amazing as a seller how some buyers are tight as a ducks butt when comes to shipping, those people are often the complainers " no inference to you on that" just an observation. sux your stuff got the piledriver. I guess the fed ex guys are still haulin butt tryin to dig out from the holidays.

I paid $15 for shipping, and would have gladly paid $20, or hell even $30, if it meant my barrel was going to make it to me safely. If money were an issue, I wouldn't be paying $465 + shipping for a barrel. =/

Dang. I'd be asking for a new barrel or a refund. $465+shipping for a shoddily packaged barrel that will be a "Fixed" barrel at the end of the day is bullshit.

How much confidence are you going to have in that barrel now? Squeaky wheel gets the grease, and if the smith takes a hit in the pocket because of it, then that is his/her fault for packaging it like a dipshit.

Your smith "fixed" it from a barrel blank. There should be no issues with him "fixing" it again. I wouldn't pay any return shipping resulting from this though.

How fixable does that look? Is there the slightest chance it induced any stresses or pushed the bore in making a flat spot or not perfectly round? It had to have smacked the ground pretty good to mash the metal that much right?

That's totally fixable. He will indicate that barrel again to recrown and touch up threads. If it pushed any metal in the crown into the bore it will show up when he indicates it along with disappear when he cuts the crown. Not that this makes the situation any more pleasurable.

Hmm well if so then Ill be really happy.

That barrel will be good to go, you've nothing to fear.

You really ought not have to pay for the extra shipping trip, though.

I ended up paying $17 for the shipping back to the smith. Maybe he can credit it back to me... I'll check out the barrel when it comes back, and if it's good to go then I'll keep it.
