Kicking Ass Somewhere
I have a couple 308 AR's and want to convert a AP 4 to a NM so I can shoot in competitions, is there any companies that do this or should I just go ahead and do it myself.

I dont shoot matches, so take this reply with a grain of salt, but if you need to change out stocks thats easy to do. Buy an all in one barrel nut / spanner wrench, an A2 stock, rifle lenght buffer, tube and spring. The same can be said for the barrel and freel float tube. As long as you have a vice, upper and lower receiver blocks its easy. Buy a new barrel of your choice, and a railed gas block and gas tube depending on barrel length. Then a detachable carry handle and front sight, swap out triggers and there ya go. The good thing is that with the QD carry handle and fron sight you can scope it if you want for what ever reason.

I hope you are not planning to shoot a 308 ap4 in service rifle across the course competition? no can do. only AR15 in .223 A2/A4 are service rifle legal for NRA across the course/CMP matches. a 308 Ar M110 configuration is legal for NRA long range competition. You can still shoot with whatever you have, it's just that you will be in match rifle class. no big difference really but just so you know the rules.

Yeah I was planning to use the AP4 but also using the M1a NM, or my 223. The M1A NM is set up for matches already just trying to get a handle on the requirements for the AR styles rifles.

I don't know of any companies that are currently offering the service for a complete conversion to a NM style rifle you are proposing, so you are more or less on your own in sourcing parts and doing the build from there. There are different ways to go about the conversion, but you'll need to be aware of the rail height differences for the DPMS upper receivers and source your .308 detachable carry handle and front sights accordingly first and foremost. Krieger makes M110 profile barrels that will work for that conversion (but it might take you a year to get one)...not sure about other barrel mfgs, but you can certainly scour around and see what you can turn up.

Frankly, I'm not sure I'd do a full-on conversion of your AP4 when Armalite already offers their AR-10NM version (exactly what you are proposing to build out which has already been done by Armalite for the AMU's use in across the course competition). They can be sourced for ~$2k. Here is one such example from a reputable company: Armalite AR-10A4 National Match 308 AR-10 10A4BNMF : Semi Auto Rifles at GunBroker.com

Any way about it...good luck. Should be a great project!

it sounds like you have lots of options. I would be all over using that M1A, since you already have it. put that money into ammo and match fees and have fun. I didn't buy a M1a until after I was distinguished with the AR but I have more fun shooting it than I ever had with the AR. I've only shot my NM AR once in the last two years.

hehe thanks,,, you know I love you guys, like a brother loves his retarded brother, the bonds are stronger than with a normal (Air Force/Navy) brother.

Even though you occasionally make unkind remarks about us Marines, just to show there's no hard feelings here's the link for the CMP rule book ;)
(sorry I don't have the one for NRA).

Yeah, we tend to quarrel more with the Navy, who are kind of like the big brothers we never wanted. We always left the Air Force alone, since none of us could understand the shit they were doing anyway.

I had a friend who's son wanted to join "the military", I told him not to let the kid join "the military" and have him go into the Air Force instead.
