FYI anyone that flies an airtanker has enormous stones. They are special folks. There are currently about 20 or so captians that do this work in the US right now for maybe 2-3 companies. Quickly take a gander at this memorial wall and estimate the testicle size of the guys that do it. This is a very small community of folks that unfortunately gets even smaller nearly every year. God bless them all and Godspeed to those that have given their lives doing this.

Memorial Wall

My dad will be kicking off his 42nd year as an air tanker pilot this month. He is flying a BAE 146 and He is really excited because this will be the first season he has ever been able to fly a plane with a pressurized cabin and air conditioning. Ponder on that for a bit. At 70 years old you would need a fucking wheel barrow to carry his balls around. Maybe a dump truck.

Saw a show this week about a commercial tanker entity that fuels Uncle Sams jets down at 29 Palms. Their aircraft was old, all analog (but they noted this as a plus because a total loss of instrumentation would allow them to still fly it).

A big part of the show was showing the manufacture of their "new" aircraft. Basically a duo male/female team crawls around inside the plane installing what looked to me to be a large heavy duty trash bag. It looked like they use clothesline to anchor this "bladder" that becomes fuel storage.

Looked Mickey Mouse to me but it gets the job done. Regular Americans doing hard things and making it happen.

Totally different kind of air tanker

I guess I should have said aerial firefighting.

Aerial firefighting, okay, stil the same flying outdated equipment under horrible conditions and dumping stuff.

I got a seat in a TBM Avenger once. I asked how did it survive? It spent time as a California aerial tanker for a short while.

Edit - just went back to the original post. If my work computer didn't have a firewall that prohibited videos it would have been evident what you meant.

Apparently the French use the same tactics when hunting as they do when fighting wars.
