Springfield 1903 - ammo question

I have a 1903 barreled action that was put in a very nice wood stock some time ago. Just bought it and have been shooting some FGMM I picked up (168 gr).

I've heard the original 1903's had 1-10" twist - is that true?.

Its not bad for a hunting rifle, I'm probably averaging 1-2" groups, sometimes larger.

Wondering if anyone has experience with the older 1903's and knew whether I would be better off with a heavier or lighter bullet?

Next step is to buy different boxes of premium hunting ammo and give those a run.

Nobody knows what your rifle will like but your rifle. Just find what works. Reloading can narrow down the results exponentially.

P.S. The twist is 1:10 - it will "shoot" any 30 cal bullet.

What year is the barrel/re-barrel? The arsenal stamp will be just behind the front, you will see a flaming bomb with a month/year stamp.

My 03 in 30-06 really likes Berger Hunting 155 VLD with varget. I was amazed. I was going to re-barrel it as it was long ago converted to a nicely done sporter, scope only, safety and bolt changed, but I got a few Bergers from a friend and figured I would give them a try. The Bergers do really well for what it is as a hunting rifle and there is no need for me to re barrel. Cold bore shot is always there for me every time. Are there better rifles, yes, but I like this old gun and it shoots just fine. t has a very nice fajen stock and carries well.

M2 ammo is in the 150 grain range. I load 168 Nosler CC's for my Garand and 03's.

RL 19 is a great powder for the bolt 03.

And if anyone is looking for a spectacular shooter 03 there was a beauty on the CMP want to sell forum this am.

1-2 inch groups at what distance?? If at 100 yds your rfile is doing better than you could possibly expect
